Hot Second Quarter Propels WVU to Victory


SANT JULIÀ DE VILATORTA CATALONIA, Spain (August 11, 2015) – West Virginia University women’s basketball posted 22-points in the second quarter en route to its third victory of the European tour with a, 66-53, win over Selecció Catalana at Pavelló Esportiu Municipal on Tuesday evening.



Both teams played near even in the first quarter, as WVU held a 16-13 lead. The Mountaineers outscored SeleccióCatalana, 22-5, in the second quarter and took a 20-point lead at halftime. The Mountaineers’ lead was dwindled to nine with under three minutes remaining in the contest. However, WVU (3-0) added a four-point spurt to close out the win.



Junior Teana Muldrow collected game-highs with 22 points and five rebounds. For the third consecutive game, Katrina Pardee reached double-figures with 11 points. Freshman guard Tynice Martin contributed with 10 points, followed by eight each from Jessica Morton and Anja Martin. Martin also added four steals in the victorious occasion.



Overall, West Virginia outrebounded Selecció Catalana once again with 34-17 advantage. The Mountaineers snatched 12 steals and dished out 13 assists in the win.


"Again, I saw some good things from our team today," said coach Mike Carey. "We still need to get better, but we are improving everyday against good competition."



Muldrow had eight of WVU’s 16 first quarter points, as the team held on to a 16-13 lead. The Mountaineers dominated the second quarter 22-5 and led 38-18 at halftime. Anja Martin had six of her eight points during that period.



Selecció Catalana outscored West Virginia 21-17 in the third quarter. SC narrowed the game to nine points at the 2:42 mark of the fourth quarter. From there, the Mountaineers pushed its lead back to double-figures with a Morton layup and sealed their third victory.



Blanca Garcia netted 14 points for Selecció Catalana, while Marta Claret reached double-digits with 11.



West Virginia concludes the European tour on Thursday, August 13 with a 8 p.m. CET/2 p.m. ET game against CREF Hola Madrid in Madrid, Spain.
