WVSPORTS.COM West Virginia head coach Neal Brown press conference summary

--West Virginia head coach Neal Brown said that they were a beat up locker room. They had a lot of injuries and didn't play well. Kansas State is the best team in the league.

--Brown said it was a rash of head injuries with four of them in total.

--Defensively they did some good things and didn't play a lot of snaps in the first half. The interception on offense by Greene the first one was a bad pass. But he felt they showed some real character the next two drives.

--Brown isn't sure when Garrett Greene got hurt during that drive when he missed the fourth down throw. Even if they tie it up he isn't sure if they had enough gas in the tank in the second half.

--The first explosive play they were in quarters coverage and they just got ran by. On the angle route to Giddens, it was a good play versus that coverage and they executed it well but they should have been able to get it down.

--Brown knew that Wyatt Milum was out after he didn't play that last drive but he didn't know Jahiem White and Garrett Greene would be out until they got in the locker room.

--Kansas State is first in the conference in rush defense and it was one and a half to two but they had a good play they just didn't execute the fourth down. He doesn't want to be too hard on the players because he isn't sure when the injury to Greene happened.

--Kansas State were completing passes at four or five yards and turned it into chunks of yards as the players weren't getting to their landmarks.

--West Virginia wasn't really productive when Nicco Marchiol came in but it wasn't all on him. It's tough to say but they weren't really productive in the second half.

--West Virginia has to put this game to rest. The Mountaineers haven't played as well both both Iowa State and Kansas State did a lot of the same things. Brown said they have really good guys in the locker room and they're disappointed. They need to get well and give themselves a chance and practice smart this week to get well to try to put together a game.

--It's next man up. They don't spend a lot of time talking about the guys that aren't going to play.

--Brown said that the score is the score and they soundly beat them in the second half. But he isn't trying to defend the score. But they're pretty beat up and the team is severely down but he doesn't believe they'll have an issue getting them up to play. They got beat by a better team right now. They've played a tough schedule and are showing the signs of that. They've had a lot of physical games and it's tough. He's really careful to criticize the players because this is a tough game.

Honest questions

When was the last time WVU fired a football or basketball coach?

We all know and understand Huggs situation, so we can park that one…..but my wife asked me last night during my drunken F U Neal Brown rage, and I honestly couldn’t answer. As I sat there cursing the final 5 minutes of the game I came to a sad realization….. Has WVU always just been a stepping stone in the coaching community? Does WVU even know how to fire a coach? 😂🤦‍♂️ are we doomed to mediocracy? Should I fake my orgasms?

Why we don't win the "big" games

We don't do the "little things" consistently. The stage gets too big for us. We think we're ready to perform, but we don't practice the small details that make you look polished and ready to perform when the bright lights go on.

Good actors rehearse their lines, and get them down so it becomes "natural" during the real thing.

We don't practice small habits or drill fundamentals so when it comes time to perform we look like we know what we're doing! That's why we miss open targets, blow coverages, get called on critical holding penalties after making a good play, miss open tackles, and can't respond when we're in critical red zone scoring situations.

We don't practice the little things that prove we're ready to perform for the big time, and that's why we always lose "big games".

What type of coach will it take to turn us around?

Not looking for names here, but more characteristics...philosophy...pedigree (coaching acumen)

for instance:
An Defensive minded coach who understands how to put players into position to make plays, and who has a "feel" for how to attack Offenses.

Or:
A disciplinarian who's a stickler for details... dots every (i)... crosses every (t) & who always gets his teams well prepared, energetic and determined to just get after it.

or
A brilliant Offensive minded coach who really understands X's and O's, and can manufacture points by using innovative schemes to get his playmakers the ball

or
A master motivator, who knows talent, can recruit his ass off, can raise funds, and knows how to generate interest & excitement in a program.

or
A great teacher, who gives his teams perspective, understands clock management, down & distance situational awareness. Gets his teams to play "smart" and always has a strategic edge or purposeful gameplan.

Now please don't say "all of the above" because just like shopping for the perfect home, you always have to give up something in order to get most of what you want! (sometimes it's location for a larger yard, or a smaller kitchen for bigger bedrooms etc) So given that we can't have the "perfect" hire, what does this board think we should be looking for to get what we need?
