WVU Release Last-Second Goal Lifts Mountaineers over No. 3 Portland

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. (Sept. 9, 2023) With just three seconds left in the game, sophomore Marcus Caldeira found the back of the net to give the No. 16 West Virginia men’s soccer team a 1-0 victory over No. 3 Portland on Saturday at Dick Dlesk Soccer Stadium. The Mountaineers stay undefeated at 5-0 while the Pilots suffer their first defeat and fall to 3-1.

It is the first time since 1975 that West Virginia has started a season with five consecutive victories.

“A great game against a great team,” said head coach Dan Stratford. “Sometimes you need a moment like that at the end and we are obviously grateful we had it. What it will do to the guys and their mentality moving forward is going to be huge.”

It is the first ranked win for the Mountaineers since beating second-ranked Tulsa in the third round of the 2021 NCAA Tournament. It is also the sixth top-three win for WVU since 2006.

Caldeira is the NCAA leader with six goals, surpassing his total from a season ago. He has also scored in all five games this year.

The winning moment started with just 20 seconds remaining as senior Jackson Lee sent a goal kick down the field to Luke McCormick, who dribbled it down the right side. He sent a ball into the box for senior Yutaro Tsukada, who headed a shot off the cross bar. The ball stayed in play and bounced to the foot of Caldeira, who buried it into the back of the net, sending the players, coaches, and fans into a frenzy.

In the most even game of the year for both squads, Portland outshot WVU, 10-9 while the Mountaineers held a 4-1 edge in shots on goal. West Virginia also took four corners compared to three for the Pilots while fouls were also close with WVU committing 11 to Portland’s 10.

Lee picks up his fourth shutout of the season, this being his most impressive as the Pilots came into the game as the nation’s top offense, averaging 4.33 goals per game.

Portland had the first chance of the game in the 19th minute as Jacob Babalai’s shot went off the post and into the hands of Lee.

In the 26th minute, the Mountaineers had their first golden opportunity as Caldeira got past the defense but could not get his shot around Portland keeper Miguel-Angel Hernandez.

In the 66th minute, Tsukada took a chance from distance, but once again, Hernandez was there to knock it over the bar.

Portland had its most dangerous opportunity of the second half in the 80th minute as they had two shots blocked in the box by the WVU defense before being cleared away.

The Mountaineers will head to No. 6 UCF on Friday to open Sun Belt play. Kickoff from Orlando is set for 7 p.m.

Negativity

Keenan/Vernon:

Guys, I have been a quiet participant on this Board and Site for many years. I have only recently begun to post things as I would much rather focus on positive content than negative things. However, it sure seems that this Board has been overtaken by nay sayers and just malicious content that makes it hard to come back here on a daily basis.

I presume that we are WVU fans and are focused on the betterment of the University and the pleasure of watching the Old Gold and Blue play sports. I get that our football team has left a bit to be desired over the past few years, but this constant hate about our coach and players needs to stop or this site will no longer have good paying citizens as myself. Now, I am a free speech person, and I believe in the first amendment, but remember that is a paid site and if many don't like the negativity, they have the option to not renew. I am not saying that someone cannot express their views, but man does it ALL have to be negative and all about how quickly we can fire our head coach? Let's get a bit of balance here and support our Mountaineers!

Please respond if you feel differently, but don't just spout the typical BS about Neal is horrible, etc. Come with some reasoned discussion that makes this board a bit more intellectual and impactful.

Positivity

I've been here a long time guys, but all this insistent positivity around our dumpster fire of a program is really starting to grind on me. You've got a lot of folks coming around lately that want us to believe that the only way to support a program is to defend everything they do.

Sorry y'all, but if you have eyes and know what you're looking at, there's nothing to be positive about right now. Being positive is fine, but not at the expense of being realistic. It's hard coming to a board of fans and seeing them tell us we need to support a guy that's spent the past five years gathering generartional wealth by building the Mountaineers into their worst state in 50 years, right at the exact moment that we need to be winning.
But that's ok, keep hoping that Brown can get us to another 6 wins and stick around a little longer so that in 10 years we can be playing Miami Ohio and Marshall as conference mates. Hey, atleast we'll be in an eastern conference again, got to look at the positive.

Question Does Garrett Green get a covid year?

I was just thinking about this this and I know he redshirted in 2020, but doesn't that give him 5 years of eligibility? I was talking to a friend and said that he was a redshirt junior and had two years left, but then he said he thought he had a covid year as well. So, Then Technically he can play this year and two more correct? Through 2025? Thanks. @Keenan Cummings
