A note regarding the Ad-lite notice

I've reactivated the Ad-lite notice at the top of the board but I wanted to make a few quick points.

This new option is free for now but 100% optional after the free trial and if you don't opt-in you will not be charged. The idea behind this was to lower the ads you see on the site, which are substantially less than most sites already. Also, this isn't an attempt to increase the ads you see here, there is no plan to do that.

If you click the X box by the notice you won't see it again. One last reminder, this is completely optional and you will not be charged without choosing to add it after the free trial.

WVU Release Izzo-Brown Earns 400th Career Victory as WVU Takes Down The Sooners

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. (Oct. 5, 2023) – Four different Mountaineers found the back of the net Thursday night as the West Virginia University women’s soccer team collected a 4-0 victory over Oklahoma at Dick Dlesk Soccer Stadium in Morgantown.

With the win, West Virginia (4-7-3, 2-2-1 Big 12) helped coach Nikki Izzo-Brown secure her 400th career victory as a head coach. WVU’s only coach in program history, Izzo-Brown’s 29-year career record now stands at 400-142-72, which includes 28 seasons with the Mountaineers and one season at West Virginia Wesleyan.

It was West Virginia’s game from the start, as sophomore forward Taylor White put WVU on the board in the 15th minute following a rebound shot from junior midfielder Lisa Schöppl. Junior forward Dilary Heredia-Beltran played a corner kick ball into the box, but Schöppl’s ensuing shot was saved by the OU keeper. However, the rebound off the save found White, and she quickly put it away for her seventh goal of the season.

From there, WVU held on to the 1-0 lead, with the defense successfully defending Oklahoma’s attacking third. However, the Mountaineers earned a corner kick in the 42nd minute, which was taken by freshman forward Jacey Rase. Her well-placed ball found the head of fifth-year senior midfielder Maya McCutcheon, who flicked it on frame and into the net to give the Mountaineers the 2-0 lead at the half.

Out of the locker room, it didn’t take long for WVU to extend its lead after Heredia-Beltran sent a beautiful ball down to freshman forward Jordyn Wilson in the 47th minute. Wilson dribbled around the OU defense and sent a long ball into the goal to give West Virginia the 3-0 advantage. The Mountaineers added a fourth tally in the 68th minute after junior forward Aria Bilal’s high shot was mishandled by the Oklahoma keeper. Heredia-Beltran earned her second assist of the match on the score, helping WVU earn the 4-0 victory.

Despite the final score, West Virginia just edged Oklahoma in shots, 16-14, while the Mountaineers placed nine shots on goal compared to four for the Sooners. WVU earned eight corner kicks in the match, while OU earned five. In addition to the four goal scorers, Heredia-Beltran quarterbacked the offense with a pair of assists to go along with two shots. White’s 15th-minute goal was credited as the game winner, the first of her career.

Fifth-year senior goalkeeper Kayza Massey and the West Virginia defense earned their sixth shutout of the season Thursday night, as Massey collected four saves to salvage the clean sheet.

With the win, the Mountaineers remain unbeaten all-time against the Sooners, as the series now moves to 14-0-1 overall, as well as 8-0 in games played in Morgantown.

Up next, WVU returns to Dick Dlesk Soccer Stadium to welcome Oklahoma State to Morgantown on Sunday, Oct. 8, for a 1 p.m. ET, kick. The match is West Virginia’s annual Pink Match, with all fans encouraged to wear pink as the Mountaineers “Pack It Pink” for breast cancer awareness.

Five Thoughts: WVU 24 TCU 21...and "The Recipe"

My Fiver on WVU's victory at The Neal Brown Stadium in Ft. Worth on Saturday night....

1. LINES. When you win with your lines, check that - when you beat another team down with your lines, there's something about that victory that's a little bit sweeter, and provides your program with a confidence that is just different than that of a 70-63 win over Baylor (2012), a 56-34 win over Kansas (2017), or a 42-34 win at Texas Tech (2018). This is by design. Neal Brown said after the game in his presser "If they are going to run tempo, remember that their offensive line has to run all those plays too." So, we bring in guys like Tomiwa Durojaiye, Fatoma Mulbah, and the game MVP Mike Lockhart, and we start rolling in defensive lineman like they're coming out of a clown car. And all these guys are high motor guys who can play - Would you want to face a fresh Edward Vesterinen if you were winded? And for our OL, 201 yards rushing and 0 sacks says it all. Now, they get some rest. They are building confidence, and swagger. This is who we are in 2023. We're going to mash you and win up front on both sides of the ball. It won't win any beauty contest. No sugar highs here. But, we will stack wins.

2. Offensively: Thought Garrett Greene and the offense slowly gained traction as the night wore on -much better in half #2. We definitely left points on the board. Going for it on 4th & 6 early in the 3rd QTR from TCU's 29 was questionable - gave up 3 there. Then, the 4th & 1 call from the Power T formation I liked, but would've been better to go over the right side of the line with Milum & Rimac out. Gave up 7 there. You add the fact that the refs took 3 away on a BS false start, and there's 13 points we left on the board. Looking at it big picture, on 4 of our final 7 drives, we scored a TD or kicked a FG. Two of the three drives where didn't score, we were stopped at the 1 and stopped on 4th and 6 from TCU's 29 where we left 3 on the board. I think this offense is close. Greene is settling in. Kole Taylor is a legit weapon at TE. Jahiem White may add the spark we need to get to the outside. Hudson Clement is turning into a legit P5 WR. Get Devin Carter some stickum & let's see more targets to EJ Horton. Houston's defense is just what the doctor ordered.

3. Aubrey Burks & Trey Lathan. Absolutely hated seeing these players injured to that extent. It looks like we'll get Burks back, which is great news on many levels, one of which being that Marcis Floyd is not a good safety. He's much better suited to play Spear and get in the box. He got lost in the sauce on TCU's final TD pass on that 4th and 2. Trey Lathan is one hell of a linebacker. We're going to miss him. But, Ben Cutter definitely looks like he's going to be a good one in his own right. Frankly, I'm excited to watch Cutter play, I just wish it were not under these circumstances, obviously. But, Cutter is going to be a good one - he's a head-hunter. I just hope he doesn't hurt us with being overly aggressive like Pat Lazear did back in the day.

4. Well-coached team. This 2023 WVU bunch has the look of a well-coached team. Very few penalties. Strong in the trenches. Buttoned up and effective special teams. True freshmen coming in, ready to play. Backups coming in, being effective. Very few turnovers. There are a few things I'd like to clean up - lack of explosive plays & DROPPING INTERCEPTIONS (Jared Bartlett breaking up the pass intended for Lee Kpogba almost sent me into orbit) being chief among those. But, Neal Brown Ball is here, finally, after 4 years. Adding a mobile QB - the missing ingredient to the overall recipe - late last season has finally made the recipe click. We are now 6-2 over our last 8 playing true Neal Brown Ball - "Bean Ball", if you will. Bean Ball is defined as a war of attrition. We're going to score as many 1-yard plunge touchdowns on you as you can take while you watch the clock bleed. Our mobile QB is going to keep the chains moving. We're going to make you earn every yard and every first down, with little exception. We're going to be efficient on special teams. We've waited and Bean Ball is here. Stacking W's.

5. They must've forgot who we are. 4-1 and the next two are very gettable...frankly, I expect to be 6-1 after Homecoming. And, if we keep up Bean Ball, then I feel good about UCF and BYU as well. Not scared of either. How does 8-1 going to Norman sound to you? You ready to get that buzz back? I've been preaching it for the past four trying seasons>>> WVU has a damn fine football program, a rich tradition, and we're not going to stay down for long. It's often lost that we were just 4-7 in 1986, before playing for the national championship two years later with a lot of the same players who endured that awful season. In '90 and '91, we went a combined 9-13 before 11-0 happened in '93. We had to suffer through 3-8 in 2001 before getting to the historic highs of 2005-2007. With our program, that next great moment or great season is always coming right around the bend....you just have to hang in. Some "bends" are longer than others.

But one thing is for damn certain - We are not the 14th place team in this League. Charles Wesley Godwin was spot-on when he spoke to the team. They must have forgotten who we are.

The recipe is in place. Let's put Houston in the skillet and fry'em.

"They picked y’all 14th. They picked you 14th. They must have forgot who you are.

You have the bodies, you have the speed, you have the physicality, and all you need is the mentality when you step on that field. There shouldn’t be anything else that needs said this year before you step on the field this year to get your absolute best other than ’14th.’

I know you guys are better than that. I believe in you. You guys are going to kill it, and I think you’re going to have one of the best seasons you’ve ever had in your life…

Them picking y’all 14th? That’s a Christmas gift right there. Open it up and pull it out before every game.”
