WVSPORTS.COM Darian DeVries Big 12 Media Days Recap

Rundown of what DDV said during Big 12 Media Day Press Conference

He's excited to be in Morgantown but it's been a journey to get here considering roster construction took a while due to there being only one returning player — "We're just excited to get started. It's been a long process taking over a job that had one returning player."

He said they're still figuring out travel as they go but they are going to feel things out as the season goes along. He recognizes this is the first time for him as well as his staff.
He said the Big 12 has lots of great atmospheres and he's looking forward to the challenges playing in this league will bring

When building a roster he didn't want to rush on putting guys together but wanted to build it their way. — "I know I told our staff the same thing we wanted to make sure we didn’t get in a hurry just to put a roster together"

On Tucker, DDV said there were conversations but Tucker put his faith in him when he landed at a new school. — "I would say for the most part he was going to come but it was conversations we had prior to that.. He obviously put a lot of faith in me in finding a spot he felt our family could be happy and I know he’s certainly excited about this opportunity"

As NIL continues to evolve he is going to have to change with it and grow while the sport and collegiate landscape grow.

Discussion of WVU record last year and IUs this year...

Is the mega conference and resulting unbalanced schedule just setting teams up for occasional fools gold...or is it a good thing because traditionally bad programs will get a chance to get to a bowl every now and then? I am not sure myself if it's a good or bad thing (though I liked playing a round robin league schedule). I know I'd hate to make coaching firing/hiring decisions based off it... I think you are really gonna need to look for a coach who has consistent success not one or even a years....

Looking for work

Hey guys - a few years ago I reached out to the group and you all were super kind and helpful.

This time my wife (no chance) is looking for work, more specifically a work-from-home position. She previously ran her own successful photography business for the last 6 years or so and has also helped me build our golf cart rental business on Anna Maria Island, FL beginning in 2022. She home schools our three young daughters (4, 6, and 7) and is looking for something she can manage from home. She's 31 and I'm 35.

I currently run our golf cart rental business with deliveries from 4am to around 10am, then start on my salary job at 11, and then kid's sports in the evenings. If I had more time in my day I'd pick something else up. Kiddos and life in general is getting expensive on just what I am currently bringing in.

Anyway, she's wanting to work from home and contribute to our finances as well and you all are the first people I thought of reaching out to. She asked me to mention that she doesn't like sales lol She's smart, kind, and has a ton of business knowledge and experience. No minimum salary or rate, just something with consistent paychecks and manageable from home with our girls.

I don't know if any of you are hiring any similar positions, if you are please reach out! Thank you so much guys!!

Did you view this article as Neal making excuses?

The poor folks on social media are all going to stroke out over it. Neal is notorious for his excuses but honestly I thought in this one he was just admitting that they got their asses beat and beat up. It's probably more of a sign of people being so done with him that they expect excuses even if that's not the intent.

Stats....

This usually at least semi corrects itself by this time of the year.. With what we had coming back, this is pretty eye opening..Remember we were #1 in the country in ypp, the last three weeks of the season, last year. That is serious, serious regression and it gets worse as the year goes on.

#83 ypp
#103 opponents ypp
Up to #9 on Coaches hot seat..

Secondly, is eye ball test. It's one thing when you come close but this team isn’t even competitive right now. It's almost unchartered territory for us. I would guess it compares to Cignetti tenure as bad goes. Yikes..
