MORGANTOWN, W.Va. (Nov. 4, 2024) – The No. 7 West Virginia University men’s soccer team closes out the regular season on the road, Tuesday, Nov. 5, at No. 6 Marshall. Kickoff from Hoops Faily Field in Huntington is set for 7:15 p.m.



Both teams are still alive for the Sun Belt regular season title heading into the contest. The Mountaineers need a win or draw to claim the title while the Thundering Herd need a win.



Overall, West Virginia is 10-1-5 on the season and 5-0-3 in the Sun Belt while Marshall is 9-1-5 and 4-0-4 in conference play. Both teams have already clinched the right to host at least the first two rounds of the Sun Belt Tournament which starts on Sunday, Nov. 10.



Graduate student Sergio Ors Navarro leads the Mountaineers with 12 goals and 28 points. He is also tied for the team lead in assists with four along with graduate student Simon Carlson and freshman Isaac Scheer.



Redshirt-senior Marc Bonnaire has made 30 saves in goal and collected seven shutouts this season.



Marshall is led by Lineker Rodrigues dos Santos offensively as he paces the team with nine goals and 20 points.



Aleksa Janjic has made 20 saves in goal and collected four shutouts.

I think that, barring significant injury issues, this basketball team is going to be a a good bit better/more fun than we are anticipating. I think we may have at least a more diverse talent mix than we've seen since Huggs took on and added too Beilien's leftovers and I know we're going to see better/more up to date coaching than we've seen in the last several years. There are plenty of holes and we're definitely thin up front, but I still think this group (healthy) is going to be good enough to beat anyone on a given night.

I'm 100% sure I'm going to hurl fewer expletives and/or objects at the television than I did during Hugg's final few years. Now back to your normal programming...

Neal has had 3 losing seasons, a 6-4 Covid year, and one 9-win season (2023).

Prior to his arrival we went 17 seasons under Rich, Stew, and Dana where we had a lone losing season (2013). We have a history of winning and it hasn’t been too long since we were winning major bowl games.

I didn’t even realize we were so successful in the 2000s until I looked at the stats.

Neal did inherit a team with a lot of holes, had to deal with Covid, and the changes to the transfer rules and NIL, but every school deals with issues. It’s clear he can’t get us beyond mediocrity and it’s time to move on. I’m a Detroit Lions fan and I know what it’s like to deal with losing, but I also see what a leader can do to change the culture. Thank you Dan Campbell.

Additionally, Tuesday’s game will be broadcast on ESPN+, with Eric Little and Meg Bulger on the call. Live stats and game notes are available on WVUsports.com.

In 19 seasons as a head coach, Kellogg owns a career record of 470-128 (.786), which makes him the fifth-winningest active Division I coach in the country by win percentage. During that span, he has also totaled 19 winning seasons and 15 20-win seasons, including three 30-win campaigns.



West Virginia and Towson meet for just the sixth time on Tuesday evening. WVU is a perfect 5-0 in the series and 3-0 in games played at the WVU Coliseum. The pair last met in 2018 where the Mountaineers claimed a 90-43 victory.



West Virginia is 35-16 all-time in season openers and has won the last 10 openers, dating back to the 2014-15 season. During that stretch, WVU is averaging 81.1 points in season openers and has limited the opposition to 42.2 points in those contests. The Mountaineers are averaging 69.9 points per game all-time in season openers.



What’s more, West Virginia is 22-3 in season openers since the 1999-00 season.



West Virginia returns eight players from last year's squad and bring 568 games of combined experience to the floor. The list of returners is highlighted by Ann Meyers Drysdale Shooting Guard of the Year and Nancy Liberman Point Guard of the Year Preseason Watchlist selections in JJ Quinerly and Jordan Harrison. Quinerly was also one of 50 athletes to the Naismith College Women’s Basketball Player of the Year watchlist.



A native of Norfolk, Virginia, Quinerly has played in 94 games, including 76 starts, in her career. She has amassed 1,364 points, 312 rebounds, 238 assists and 231 steals during her first three seasons at WVU. In all-time program history, Quinerly ranks eighth in steals and 21st in points.



Harrison has played in and started every game of her career. She has scored 858 points, 342 assists, 261 rebounds and 165 steals across two seasons. Quinerly’s and Harrison each earned all conference honors last year and were named to the all defensive team.



Additionally, six newcomers join the team to make up WVU's 14-woman squad. Junior guard Sydney Shaw brings the most experience to the floor for the Mountaineers from the newcomers, playing in 64 career contests after transferring from Auburn over the summer.

WVU and Baylor will kickoff at 4 p.m. and be televised by ESPN2.

--West Virginia head coach Neal Brown said that their season will be made in November. Made the defensive coordinator change and Jeff Koonz has always stepped up any time that he's been put in charge. Special teams Tony Thompson will be the lead on punt team and Chris Haering will work with special teams.

--Elijah Kinsler and Rickey Williams both impressed as young guys and Aden Nelson, Jason Cross and Keyshawn Robinson stood out at DB in the scrimmages. Diore Hubbard stood out, Kyle Altuner was released and practiced full go. Justin Terry and Lucas Austin both did some nice things and Brandon Rehmann had his best day as a Mountaineer at wide receiver.

--Garrett Greene is doubtful, Ayden Garnes, Aubrey Burks and Jaden Bray are all out. Everybody else should be back.

--Cincinnati has a three man front like Iowa State. On offense they run the ball and have hit a lot of explosives. The quarterback is playing well and their offensive line are all fifth or sixth year players. They added a tight end Royer from Ohio State and he's made them different offensively. Xavier Henderson has been the deep threat. They are a really good team.

--This league is wide open and he wouldn't be surprised if there isn't a two loss team in the Big 12 title game.

--Brown said they have to continue to get better on defense. At times they've played really well on defense. Three quarters against Arizona, first half against Kansas State but they haven't been consistent. They have to limit explosives and get some takeaways. They have to do a better job of lining up but the structure of the defense is what it is. They have to mix up some looks.

--The structure is the structure but they can't give offenses the answers to the test.

--It's too be determined, anytime you have a change of leadership it's going to be different. His leadership style is different. They made the changes.

--Everybody is coaching. Jeff Koonz will move around a little bit on defense. But Jordan didn't have a position.

--Kekoura Tarnue will practice tomorrow. Wyatt Milum practiced Thursday.

--The way you look at the season is in thirds. Traditionally they have played their best football in November and they need to live up to that this year, too.

--This is big for him. Koonz is at a point where he's ready to do this from a football perspective and leadership. He's turned down some coordinator opportunities to stay here.

--It doesn't do any good to look back and it's about looking forward.

--Jared Bartlett left on good terms and he's happy for him. Wants him to do well every game but this one.

--West Virginia needs Nicco Marchiol to hit some shots down the field and sustain. There is some decision making in the run game that he needs to clean up. It's about putting him in the best position possible with a game plan and how they're calling it.

--Greene should throw a little bit this week and while there should be some rust there. They're going to be really careful and when he's ready to go hell have an opportunity to play.

--Brown said they'll bus over and practice in Columbus and then they'll fly back. They will do the meetings here and then get on the bus to head over.

--CJ Donaldson will be ready to go.

--West Virginia addressed the team on the defensive coordinator change Tuesday and was up front.

ESPN released a list of their top 50 newcomers (transfers/freshman)

Tucker DeVries was ranked No. 17, while Javon Small wasn't ranked but tabbed as one of the 'Sixteen More Newcomers to Watch'

and the 4 still to play us are, I think, winning.

Will be interesting where they put Boise State and BYU in the initial rankings and also how far down the #2 B12 and ACC teams are. Based off the AP poll for this week it would be something like this...
