The apathy is real. Fix?

A WVU loss used to bother most of us more than it does now.

I wish I had enough money to fix this shit show. I don’t.

Not sure what the proper approach is- but I think a low level up and comer is where we have to go. Whatever we do - WE HAVE TO CHANGE ONE SECOND AFTER REGULAR SEASON FINISHES.

Interim coach for bowl game if we win another.

Whoever and whatever we can afford is better than status quo at this point. If we have a money donor wanting a say- what other choice is there???

WVSPORTS.COM West Virginia head coach Neal Brown press conference summary

--Fans are upset and they should be they haven't played well at home. Some of that is due to the opponents. Baylor out played them in the second half and are playing their best football right now. The game was there to win in the third and the fourth. Brown loves his team but they didn't play well enough. All three groups haven't been able to play together at one time. On offense they functioned well in the first half but defense and special teams didn't. In the second half, the defense got stops and the offense didn't execute. On offense they did a lot of really good things but they didn't get it done at winning time. They had multiple third downs to get it down seven and they just didn't do a good job on third and fourth down. Traylon Ray's injury wasn't good and it hurt them emotionally. It was visible on the field what the injury was and that was tough to overcome. Defensively the same issues that have plagued them all year showed up again tonight. They were 9-13 on third and fourth down. West Virginia didn't tackle as well again and the Bears got after them physically on the perimeter. They struggled getting off blocks early in the first and late in the game. Special teams the specialist struggled tonight.

--West Virginia would have had a first down on that fourth down but scored but they had a missed assignment in the a-gap. They had a drop on a fourth down where they had a good play. They had some critical errors in those situations but there was winning moments to be had and they didn't get it done.

--Baylor has played extremely well on offense for three weeks. Did a good job mixing up tempo and did a good job getting easy completions. They got the football out fast. They got some pressure and affected a couple passes later but the ball was getting out. They didn't play the ball well in the air and it's been an issue all year.

--Traylon Ray won't be back this year. He'll recover and be fine but he won't play this year. His mom was here and those are tough moments.

--West Virginia tackled better and the coverage was better and contested more balls in the third quarter.

--Hudson Clement was cramping but is a really good player that wins against man coverage. They struggled at times.

--When you're not playing well you give up big touchdowns. On the long run before the half they misfit it and safety. They threw the touchdown against three deep and they shouldn't be able to do that. The screen to 34 that ball should have been down for two yards but he isn't sure if they touched him.

--You have to set an edge and as a corner and nickel to bring it back to pursuit. They weren't getting off the block or setting the edge and getting it back.

--Garrett Greene ran for 150 yards, took some sacks in throw it mode but he played kind of how he played he competes his tail off and people do not like playing against him because he gets out of the pocket and can run the ball. The interception was a really bad decision and should have never been thrown and he missed some underneath stuff because he got in a hurry. Brown loves him because he competes and he's an explosive runner. But then he missed some short ones that would have been first downs or third and manageables.

--A lot of what West Virginia does is read based but in the third quarter Baylor started blitzing and they struggled against that. They switched up some of their blitz patterns in the third and they caught them in the third.

--Baylor has done some stuff like onside.

--Brown said when you're having trouble stopping people the offense puts pressure on themselves and they spend a lot of time controlling what you can control. They didn't do that and defensively they got stops and had opportunities in the third quarter but they didn't take advantage. This isn't a case where the defense played poorly and the offense played well enough to win because this should have been tied on two different occasions but they didn't make the play.

--Trotter didn't practice all week because of an injury.

--Justin Robinson had to step up moving forward and hope to get Jaden Bray back this week with Traylon Ray out.

--It's frustrating to lose at home. He gets the fans frustration and you've got to be able to win at home. They've got one more opportunity to fix it and that's what's got to happen. They have a UCF team in there that is hungry to get their sixth win too. It will be senior day and they have to figure out a way to play better but win.

WVSPORTS.COM Observations: West Virginia football vs. Baylor

--Well, it's a story we're all familiar with at this stage of things. The Mountaineers sit at 36-34 through 70 games under head coach Neal Brown and like many others this one was right there for the taking and West Virginia simply couldn't take it. Any dreams of potentially winning out and finding a spot in the Big 12 title game is now gone and the harsh reality of just trying to find a win to go to a bowl game is now the primary focus for this team. This was a team that set out with goals of playing in Arlington and coming off a nine win season and they now have to win one of the final two games just to qualify for a bowl game. There's no way to spin it that just isn't going to get it done.

--The Mountaineers are 2-4 at home this season. That's just gross.

--West Virginia had beaten Baylor six straight times in Morgantown but that is now out the window. The Bears are playing well right now but much like other games this season you can't help but wonder what could have been as there were plenty of chances.

--The Mountaineers had 499 yards, 35 points, 29 first downs and still lost this game by double digits. The third consecutive home loss by double digits. The offense wasn't anywhere close to perfect in this game and left a lot of opportunities on the field but to roll up those type of numbers and still lose by 14 just isn't going to get it done. This team won a game with 9 first downs last week and this week 20 more led to a 14-point home loss.

--The defense really struggled in the first half allowing 35 points and 335 yards, but credit in the second as the group held Baylor to just 14 points and 177 yards some of that when the game was really already decided. The defense got three critical stops in the second half and the offense was never able to take advantage of it stalling out at the Baylor 38 with a punt, the Baylor 35 on downs and the Baylor 9 on downs. Now that doesn't excuse the first half for the defense, because Baylor had their way with them but they did adjust and played much better. That pass interference call toward the end of the game was a back breaker for the unit and it seemed things really fell apart after that.

--Third down wasn't kind to the defense as Baylor was 8-13 and neither was first down as the Bears averaged 7.4 yards per play. That's a tall task. Baylor utilized a lot of throws behind the line of scrimmage and screen type plays with a lot of success as the Mountaineers simply couldn't get off blocks to make tackles. The Bears turned a lot of short yardage plays into big gains. On those third downs, the difference was third and longs West Virginia got off the field both times but most of them were 1-4 yards and they were predictably 6-9 in those situations. The defense gave up 10 explosives.

--West Virginia only scored once in the second half and it was at the end of the game where the game was out of hand. They did move the ball, but simply couldn't make plays in critical situations.

--Mixed bag for senior quarterback Garrett Greene who completed 19-39 passes for 237 yards with 2 touchdowns and a pick while rushing for 129 yards and 2 more scores. His legs were a difference maker for the offense and really helped them pick up chunks of yards when things broke down, but he definitely missed some throws that were there. Thought Baylor did a better job limiting him running the ball in the second half and overall the offense wasn't able to consistently make enough plays.

--Felt West Virginia got away from the run in this one at times but Jahiem White had 67 yards and CJ Donaldson had 60 and a touchdown. Baylor did a pretty good job there, but the Mountaineers rushed for 262 yards when you include what Greene was able to do.

--Felt losing Traylon Ray to injury is a massive blow for this offense given his ability to stretch the field. There simply aren't a ton of pass catching options right now and that pool is even more limited without Ray. Hudson Clement did have 3 catches for 71 yards and Kole Taylor did his thing but this is something to watch moving forward. As soon as we sing the praises of Justin Robinson he goes out and drops that fourth down ball. That was a critical play in this game.

--Baylor had 4 sacks and 8 tackles for loss in this game and while it isn't the case it seemed like all of them mattered.

--Only three penalties for 27 yards, although some of those were key moments.

--West Virginia was 18-1 rushing for 200 yards under Brown, but now you can tack this one in the loss column.

--Kickoff coverage took a step back in this one after some really strong performances. Punting also wasn't up to par with Oliver Straw mishitting some balls. On the plus side, Preston Fox did have another 21-yard return and looked very good in that role again.

--West Virginia will now take on a 4-6 UCF team with both teams vying for bowl eligibility. That's exactly what we thought would be the case in the final home game of the year when the season started, right? Simply put this effort isn't going to cut it and it's just another lost opportunity at home against a quality team. The Mountaineers find ways to frustrate the fan base of late and this one won't help in that department at all.

WVSPORTS.COM WVU basketball coaching search

With the start of 2024, the behind the scenes chats with potential coaches will begin to heat up. Here’s a list of names I think could be involved. Feel free to add to WVU’s little black book.

—Josh Eilert—current WVU interim head coach
—Andy Kennedy—UAB (Vernon said isn’t going to happen)
—Dusty May—FAU
—Pat Kelsey—College of Charleston
—Bob Richey—Furman
—Andy Enfield—USC
—Niko Medved—Colorado State
—Anthony Grant—Dayton
—Mark Byington—James Madison
—Ben McCollum—NW Missouri State
—Steve Forbes—Wake Forest

I’m sure there will be some bigger names mentioned. I think this is going to be a good year to be hiring because there won’t be many big time jobs opening up
