Track Qualifies Seven for NCAA Prelims


MORGANTOWN, W.Va. (May 21, 2015) – Seven members of the West Virginia University track and field team qualified for the 2015 Outdoor Track & Field NCAA East Preliminary Championships from May 28-30 at Hodges Stadium in Jacksonville, Florida.


Senior Kaitlyn Gillespie, junior Kelly Williams, sophomore Brianna Kerekes and freshmen Millie Paladino, Shamoya McNeil, Amy Cashin and Maggie Drazba all qualified after ranking in the top 48 of the East Region in their respective events this season.


Gillespie, the Big 12 Champion in the 10,000 meters, ranks No. 7 in the 10K this season. She qualifies with a time of 33:45.56.


Paladino, a Morgantown, West Virginia, native, leads the way for the Mountaineers in the 1,500-meter run, ranked 24th with a season-best of 4:21.35. She is joined in the event by Cashin, who ranks 31st with a 4:22.31, and Kerekes, who sits 42nd in the East Region with a time of 4:23.30. Williams will be the fourth WVU runner in the event, ranking 45th with a time of 4:23.75.


Drazba is slated to compete in the 5,000-meter run after qualifying with a time of 16:21.43, good for 33rd in the region.


McNeil will be the Mountaineers’ lone representative in the field events, qualifying in the triple jump. She enters the meet ranked 24th in the event with a season-best jump of 12.81-meters. McNeil previously placed fourth in the triple jump at the 2015 Big 12 Championship in Ames, Iowa.


The Mountaineers sent five competitors to the East Preliminary Round a season ago, with three earning All-America status at the NCAA Championships.


The 2015 NCAA Outdoor Track & Field East Preliminary Championships will be held May 28-30 at Hodges Stadium in Jacksonville, Florida.
