MORGANTOWN, W.Va. (Feb. 19, 2024) – The No. 1-ranked West Virginia University rifle team will compete for its nation-best 20th NCAA title at the 2023-24 NCAA Championships, as announced on Monday by the NCAA Rifle Committee.

The NCAA Championships are being hosted by West Virginia and are scheduled for March 8-9. The season-ending event will take place inside the WVU Coliseum in Morgantown for the second time in program history.

West Virginia has qualified for the NCAA Championships in each of the last 16 postseasons, all of which have come under Jon Hammond's leadership. WVU owns a nation-best 19 national titles and has won six under Hammond, including five straight from 2013-17.

The Mountaineers qualified as the field's first-ranked team with a qualifying mark of 9500.33. Joining WVU at this year's championships are No. 2 TCU, No. 3 Air Force. No. 4 Kentucky, No. 5 Alaska-Fairbanks, No. 6 Ole Miss, No. 7 Navy and No. 8 Nebraska.

This year's field earned championship bids based on the average of its three highest regular-season aggregate scores, with each score recorded at a different range. The average of the three scores was then added to the aggregate total from the team's designated qualifier to determine the final field.

A total of 48 competitors will compete at the championships, with eight selected as individual qualifiers. An NCAA rule stipulates that a school that qualified is prohibited from sending individual qualifiers.

Next up, West Virginia travels to West Point, New York, on Saturday, Feb. 24-25, for the 2023-24 Great American Rifle Conference (GARC) Championships, hosted by Army. The event will be held at the Tronsrue Marksmanship Center in West Point. Smallbore on Saturday and air rifle on Sunday will both begin at 8 a.m. ET.

How does Army not consistently make the Top 5? (Don't go political, as FWIW they have only 1 championship across all administrations.)

Army has so much more to do than just shoot accurately. Those dedicated to just shooting in the Army are not all going to West Point and those that do, usually learn that skill after graduation. If it wasn't just West Point students on the team, then Army would likely be very competitive.
