--Big win Saturday night and it was important for the state and team. Special teams the kickoff coverage after the penalty was good, made a 42-yard field goal and had a 14-yard punt return and fielded a punt to save field position. They downed a punt at the one and had a -11 return on the punt return. They had a punt block that was due to poor technique and that was disappointing. They had one good kickoff return and they had two really ignorant penalties in the game with a late hit on a kickoff return and where CJ took his helmet off. On defense, they had three interceptions and the pass coverage kept them to 4.0 yards per attempt. They had good pressure on the quarterback and had people around him all night. They were really good on third and fourth down. They missed some tackles early and misfit some things but they had more missed tackles on the first drive than they did the rest of the game. Offensively they controlled the game and they didn't lose it. Had 10 points off takeaways and ran the ball effectively. The reason we didn't kick that field goal at the point late in the game is they were up 11. It was a two score game it really didn't help you and you can get a field goal blocked it can hurt. The penalty set them back.
--OL of the Week was Zach Frazier he had 14 knockdowns in the game. Special teams player of the week was Malachi Ruffin. Defensive Player of the Week was Beanie Bishop he had an interception and seven tackles. Offensive Player was CJ Donaldson who ran the ball the best he has since he's been here. Fatorma Mulbah played his best game in his college career he played 16 plays and got good push up front. Doug Nester had nine knockdowns in the game. Scout team was Charlie Katarincic, Corey McIntyre and Colin McBee.
--Texas Tech is a good rush game. Fans were critical last week and we need them because it's the start of Big 12 play. It's the last game of a three game home stretch and if they defend their home turf they have a good chance to have a good reason. Bruce Irvin and Hall of Fame game with those players being recognized.
--Texas Tech has had their number and beaten them four years in a row and last year is as bad as Brown has seen a team play. This is a chance to prove the so called experts wrong. He has a lot of respect for their football program and Joey McGuire. Special teams they have the McNamara kid at punter and is elite. Field goal guy has a really strong led and their punt returner they have to tackle him. They have two guys on kickoff that can really run and elite speed. Defensive they are an attacking group and real veterans and they controlled the line of scrimmage last year. Offensively they have great skill players and three or four wide receivers that can play anywhere in the league. The running back is going to be an NFL player and he can pass protect, run inside and outside. The quarterback is playing the best football of his career and they play really fast.
--Garrett Greene it's too early to say it's an ankle injury and it's about how he responds over the next couple days but they won't play him if he can't utilize his best skill set which is his athleticism. If he can't go then Nicco Marchiol will play. Greene didn't practice today or tomorrow and Marchiol got every rep. They didn't go to a lot of motions and shifts once Marchiol left the game.
--Marchiol has really high end ability he can run the football and is an in-between the tackles type of runner that is physical. He is really good with balls in-between the hashes and has good velocity. He didn't throw the ball as well in the game due to timing but he can do a lot of stuff with the RPO game. The expectation is that if he plays they will be really good on offense.
--Sean Boyle will be the backup. Tomorrow he'll get those same reps.
--Brown said it's a unique game that they played Pittsburgh last week. Brown tries to educate them on the historical reference on the game but they don't understand it like the 20-year season ticket holder or somebody from here. It's really beneficial they play Texas Tech next because they've beaten them up.
--EJ Horton's role will increase. Justin Johnson tried to go and still no 100-percent. They didn't do a whole lot today.
--Montre Miller will have surgery and miss the rest of the year and he will have to seek an appeal.
--Continue to get the ball to Kole Taylor. Treylan Davis did some nice things blocking and Kole Taylor did a good job. They're getting a lot of playing time and helping on offense for sure.
--The common theme is they move the ball on West Virginia pretty well and they haven't ran the ball as well as they need to in order to win games against Texas Tech. Tempo has been an issue.
--Texas Tech is still throwing the ball more than they're running it but the running back is special.
--Both of the Texas Tech quarterbacks are capable and they don't change much depending on who is in there.
--It's hard. Quarterbacks have always been if they aren't playing they are going to leave. it's hard to have depth at any position but at quarterback it's interesting to see how many backup quarterbacks are true freshmen or redshirt freshmen.
--You have to be transparent why they did or didn't win a starting job and continue their development. What they've done for their young quarterbacks is at the end of practice the guys that played went in and then they scrimmaged the younger guys with Sean Boyle getting every rep.
