--Ebbs and flows with practice as this is the first three days of contact. They had some nonsense during inside period drill but that's just part of it. He likes the group and fun group to coach and they are trying to figure out as much from a scheme standpoint and then identity the personnel to what they do well with their guys. They will go in the stadium Saturday and will do some 11-on-11 work but it won't be a full scrimmage. They will then go three days next week.

--The offensive line needs to play well if they want to continue to have success. They're going to miss Zach Frazier and Doug Nester but sometimes the assumption is you lose and you keep rolling but there's a lot to go into it. The defensive line really handed it to the offensive line Friday and a big part of that is the interior of the defensive line had a great day. They lost more than they won against Zach Frazier but they were ready to return the favor this time. There's a lot of work that goes into that and offensive line wise they have competed at a much higher level. It's time for Sullivan Weidman and Mo Hamilton to step up. There is pressure on Wyatt Milum to step up and be the leader that Frazier was. They've got some work to do.

--At tight end how they develop, if they do they're ok and if they don't they need to find one. Interior part of the offensive line they need to progress or they'd need one. And the same can be said for safeties.

--There's some biases in general. Sometimes as position coaches you're looking at one specific area or one side of the ball and not seeing the big picture and when you're seeing it through a more narrow point of view that part is most important. The position or area coach is going to be close and there is going to be some biases there. As a person that has to have a big view of it you have to make some decisions through some trial and error and making some poor decisions you look at character, athletic and academics that have been good evaluation tools for West Virginia. You have to be OK if that player goes somewhere else and if they're successful so you have to believe in the process.

--Brown looks at it from each room. There is risk involved with players but you don't want too much risk. It's the same looking at position rooms as it would he a financial portfolio. Youth to some veterans you also want some balance between the two. Personal character and football character. How they've established they are going to play it's important for guys to strain and be tough people. If they show that on tape and the talent is similar they will take those tough people first.

--In the portal era, outside the top 8 to 10 teams there isn't this huge talent discrepancy one through 16. Those intangibles really matter and the way they show up is in the dark in the winter and the summer and the standards of the program. If you can get guys about the right thing that have integrity discipline and accountability. And if it means something to them, they're tough and they strain you get the majority of you team that way it shows up. When you get live evaluations you see live talent, but you also can tell do they take coaching. These are the type of players we want and then the ones that will get them beat.

--You're never going to hit 100-percent on transfers but he trusts the process the scouting department does and they do a good job measuring the football and outside.

--Garnett Hollis is a guy that is going to be an NFL player and Jaheem Joseph is around the ball a lot. They're both students of the game and that manifests itself as they're in the building a lot.

--You try to evaluate the talent with transfers. You want FCS players to be dominant at that level. They want productive players or potential. They're looking for the best available and not everybody is going to be a starter but you have to set reasonable expectations so they know what to expect.

--Competition is a big piece of improving on special teams.
