WVU Release West Virginia Defeats Army on Saturday

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. (Jan. 20, 2024) The No. 1-ranked West Virginia University rifle team opened the spring schedule with a 4739-4693 win over No. 16 Army on Saturday inside the WVU Shell Building at the WVU Rifle Range in Morgantown.



The Mountaineers claimed both disciplines in the match, winning smallbore with a score of 2362-2331 and air rifle 2377-2362. The Mountaineers packed the top of the leaderboard, claiming the top seven spots individually. WVU is now 44-10 all-time against the Army.



Fifth-year senior Malori Brown, seniors Matt Sanchez and Molly McGhin, junior Natalie Perrin and freshman Griffin Lake served as counters in smallbore while Junior Gavin Barnick, Brown, McGhin, Perrin and Lake counted in air rifle.



Lake posted the highest aggregate score, finishing at 1185. He took the top overall spot in air rifle with a 596 and third in smallbore with a 589. Sanchez and Perrin finished in a tie for second place with matching marks of 1183. Sanchez posted the high in smallbore with a 592, a career-high, and added a 591 in air rifle. Perrin posted scores of 589 in smallbore and 594 in air rifle. Her mark in smallbore matched a career high.



Brown finished in fourth place, also posting the highest mark in smallbore with a 592, a season high, to match Sanchez. She added a score of 589 in air rifle.



McGhin claimed fifth place with an 1180 (585 SB – 595 AR) and Gavin Barnick finished just behind with an 1179 (587 SB – 592 AR). Senior Becca Lamb hit a season high in air rifle with a 595 and added a mark of 582 in smallbore. Her aggregate total of 1177 also hit a new season high.



Senior Tal Engler 1174 (585 SB – 589 AR) and freshman Maximus Duncan 1163 (578 SB – 585 AR) also competed at the event.



Next up, WVU is on the road against Navy on Saturday, Jan. 27. The match against the Midshipmen is set to begin at 8 a.m. ET, in Annapolis, Maryland.
