WVU Release Mountaineers Take on Army in First Match of 2024

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. (Jan. 19, 2024) –The No. 1-ranked West Virginia University rifle team opens its spring schedule on Saturday, Jan. 20, when the Mountaineers welcome Army to the WVU Rifle Range in Morgantown.



Friday's contest against the Black Knights will be shot in two relays throughout the day. The opening smallbore relay will begin at 8 a.m. ET and the second air rifle relay will follow at 10 a.m. A live scorecard for the match can be found at ncaarifle.org. West Virginia (9-0, 3-0 GARC) is 43-10 all-time against Army (5-2, 2-1 GARC), with the series beginning in 1957. The meeting is the first this season between the two programs. WVU claimed last season's meeting 4725-4649 in West Point, New York.



The Mountaineers are competing for the first time since the WVU Fall Classic where West Virginia downed No. 7 Air Force, No. 8 Murray State and No. 10 Nebraska. The Mountaineers scored 4741 at the event.



The winning effort by West Virginia marked the ninth straight top-11 team in the nation the Mountaineers defeated to open the season. Six Mountaineers packed the leaderboard, with six occupying the top 10 spots in the overall standings.



WVU holds the top aggregate (4743.0) and smallbore (2361.8) average in the nation. West Virginia's average of 2381.1 in air rifle is third behind TCU and Alaska Fairbanks.
