MORGANTOWN, W.Va. (September 6, 2018) – West Virginia University redshirt senior quarterback and Heisman Trophy candidate Will Grier has been named the National Quarterback of the Week by the Davey O’Brien Foundation and the Manning Award Quarterback of the Week, as announced by the two organizations today.

Grier, a native of Charlotte, North Carolina, led WVU to a season-opening, 40-14 win over Tennessee on Sept. 1, at Bank of America Stadium in Charlotte. He completed 25 of 34 pass attempts for a career-high 429 yards and five touchdowns. With the performance, Grier has now thrown five touchdowns in a game a school-record four times. He also connected with 11 different receivers in the win.

The Mountaineers return to the field for the 2018 home opener on Saturday, Sept. 8, when they host Youngstown State. Kickoff is set for 6 p.m. ET, at Milan Puskar Stadium.

The Davey O'Brien Foundation was created in 1977, and the National Quarterback Award, the oldest and most prestigious college quarterback award, was first issued in 1981. The Davey O'Brien Fan Vote, now in its 12th year, will give fans a chance to play a role in determining the award winner. Fans may vote for their favorite quarterback at VoteOBrien.org daily beginning Sept. 10.

Since 1977, the Davey O'Brien Foundation has given away more than $1 million in scholarships and university grants to help high school and college athletes transform leadership on the field into leadership in life. For more information, visit DaveyOBrien.org.

In its first 14 years, the Manning Award has recognized the top names in college football. It has honored quarterbacks from 12 different schools and from four different conferences. The Big 12 Conference (Baker Mayfield, Vince Young, Colt McCoy and Robert Griffin III) joins the Southeastern Conference (Johnny Manziel, Cam Newton, JaMarcus Russell and Tim Tebow) and the Atlantic Coast Conference (Deshaun Watson twice, Matt Ryan and Jameis Winston) with four Manning Award winners each, while Texas is the only school with two different winners (McCoy and Young).

All the Manning Award winners follow in the footsteps of the Mannings themselves. In college, Archie, Peyton and Eli Manning combined for over 25,000 passing yards and 201 touchdowns while playing in 10 bowl games and earning four bowl MVP awards. Archie was the No. 2 pick in the NFL Draft, while both Peyton and Eli were selected No. 1 overall.
