Joseph Sustains Season-Ending Knee Injury

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. (October 7, 2015) – West Virginia University football coach Dana Holgorsen has announced today that senior All-American safety Karl Joseph sustained a right knee injury in a non-contact drill Tuesday during practice and will miss the remainder of the season.

One of the greatest Mountaineers to ever wear the Gold and Blue, Joseph has started all 42 games of his career and logged an incredible 3,388 plays, including 2,980 on defense. He has produced 284 tackles, including 209 solo stops, 16.5 tackles for loss, two sacks, nine interceptions, 14 pass breakups, eight forced fumbles and six fumble recoveries.

“I am devastated and heartbroken for Karl,” Holgorsen said. “He is a young man who has given everything he has to our football program and University over the past four years and who elected to return to WVU for his senior season to earn his degree and to be a part of something special with this team. He exemplifies what it means to be a Mountaineer. Karl is an All-American, a fierce competitor, a leader and I know he will have a full recovery, and I can’t wait to watch him on Sundays next fall.”

Joseph, a first team All-Big 12 performer in 2014, is known nationally for his hard-hitting and aggressive defensive ability. He was having an outstanding year to date, playing at an All-American level, leading the nation in interceptions (5), No. 23 in passes defended and No. 27 in fumbles recovered. This season, he is No. 2 on the Mountaineer defense in tackles with 20, including 15 solo stops. He also has a sack, two tackles for loss, a pass breakup and a fumble recovery.

“I want to thank my teammates and my coaches for their outpouring of support,” Joseph said. “This has been difficult for me and my family but I know I will come through this stronger than ever. I will forever be a Mountaineer and will be cheering on our team every step of the way.”

Joseph was named National Player of the Week by the Football Writers Association of America, Jim Thorpe Defensive Back of the Week and the Big 12 Defensive Player of the Week for his performance in game one against Georgia Southern. He was awarded the game ball by Holgorsen after putting up eight tackles, had three interceptions in the third quarter and recovered a fumble.

He finished second the team with 92 tackles as a junior and led WVU as a sophomore with four fumble recoveries, ranking No. 2 nationally. He also had 68 tackles, five pass breakups and three tackles for loss. Joseph was named a freshman All-American and WVU’s Defensive Player of the Year in 2012 after leading the Mountaineers in tackles (104), solo tackles (76) and tied for the team lead in forced fumbles (3) and interceptions (2).

So could he medical redshirt and still have another year or do you think he'll go ahead to the nfl?

If I had to make a list of the Top 5 players we couldn't afford to lose for a successful 2015 campaign, Joseph would top the list.

Crap . . . get better soon, Karl.

I'm assuming Karl will make his way out of the tunnel and to the sidelines with his teammates Sat eve?.....he'll certainly deserve and get a BIG round of applause from the Mountaineer faithful!

If the NCAA refuses to play players then I believe all players who go down with season ending injury in their senior years should be rewarded an extra year of eligibility so they can redeem themselves. Call it medical redshirt or whatever you want. This is a major hit to his draft stock, he was soaring. His only perceieved weakness was his coverage skills and he's taken that to the next level over the past 2 years especially this year with 5 interceptions. I think he was on his way to being a 1st or 2nd round draft pick. Now, he'll probably be a late 3rd or 4th round guy. Absolutely unreal. Feel so bad for Karl. Never missed a game, always gave his all, great player, great leader, etc. Cannot ask more from a guy.

Wow. Really sorry to hear this news about Joseph. He got my attention two years ago when we played our first game against WVU as a Big 12 opponent and the guy was all over the field making tackles. He was by far and away, my favorite "non-Sooner" player in the Big 12. The guy could run like a deer and hit like a ton of bricks. Glad to hear that he'll make a full recovery and I hope to see him playing in the NFL next year. Until then, I wish him the very best.

Good luck this weekend and throughout the rest of the season. This Sooner will be pulling for the Mountaineers to beat the hell out of OSU!!!

Indeed it would be nice if this were the case...although I'm not sure it'd be in HIS best interests to come back. His draft stock will likely drop but imo he'll still receive a lot of interest and make a pretty good payday, and he will have his degree. I thought he was ready to make the jump last year and was super excited in having him back for another season.... who knows maybe If afforded the opportunity he would be back....feel terrible for Karl to be on the sidelines when he's dying to be out there with the team...Intense, fearless, skilled, dedicated, intelligent and team player are some other adjectives I'd like to add in reference to #8...

I know one thing...some team is gonna get some real value whenever he comes off the board!

Like our losing Conner, this sucks. Hoping this young man gets better and has an excellent pro career. Tough one, for sure.

Where do you get off posting on a WVU board after posting the vial lying crap you post on the pitt board? You're an a$$hole. And yes, I would tell that to your face.

Maybe one day, a future coaching staff will hire him to return to coach the safeties or CB's after his near term endeavors are done (professional FB). Kind of like who we have on the current defensive staff. Bringing the same intensity and fire to inspire future WVU players.

I hate this for Joseph. He is one of the premier players in the nation. I hope he comes back soon as possible and wish him the best.

Who is his back up? Obviously you cannot replace a guy like that, but with all the skill in the defensive backfield it should cushion the blow if the back up can be serviceable.

This hurts not only a WVU fan level but also on a personal level. He gave it everything he had all the time. Reminds me of Desean's injury. This is going to suck. If he attacks rehab like he does the football he should be able to heal fast and have a big impact on his draft status.
