MORGANTOWN, W.Va. (Sept. 1, 2024) – Behind a pair of early goals in the first and second halves, the West Virginia University women’s soccer team earned a 2-0 win over Robert Morris inside Dick Dlesk Soccer Stadium in Morgantown on Sunday night.

The Mountaineers (3-2) found the back of the net in the third minute of the first half and the eighth minute of the second half to tally the two-goal win over the Colonials. Senior forward Dilary Heredia-Beltran scored the eventual game winner in the first frame, while junior forward Taylor White added her third tally of the year at the 52:22 mark in the second.

A pair of one-touch passes from fifth-year senior midfielder Lilly McCarthy and junior forward Ajanae Repass helped Heredia-Beltran put WVU up 1-0 early in the match. Sunday’s game-winning tally marked the Wichita, Kansas, native’s sixth of her career and second this season.

West Virginia’s lead doubled when Respass notched her second assist of the match, finding White ahead of her in the box for the score. White now leads the team with three goals this season, while Respass now leads WVU with three helpers on the year. The Highlands Ranch, Colorado, native also became the first Mountaineer to tally two assists in a game since Heredia-Beltran did so against Oklahoma on Oct. 5, 2023.

The Mountaineer defense was stellar against the Colonials, keeping Robert Morris off the stat sheet completely. Redshirt sophomore goalkeeper Bailey Herfurth earned her first career start on Sunday, but she wasn’t tested in the match as the defense held RMU to zero shots on the way to its third shutout of the season. The West Virginia offense totaled 25 shots, eight shots on goal and seven corner kicks.

In addition to Herfurth’s first Mountaineer start, sophomore midfielder Gabby Lamparty also earned her first career starting nod, while freshman forward Alexis made her first career appearance for WVU.

Up next, West Virginia remains at home when it welcomes JMU to Morgantown on Thursday, Sept. 5. Kickoff at Dick Dlesk Soccer Stadium is scheduled for 7 p.m. ET. It’s a True Blue game, with all fans encouraged to wear blue. It’s also the team’s Teachers in the Bleachers night, as the team celebrates current educators in the Morgantown area.
