Women’s Soccer Defeats Ohio State in Spring Finale
MORGANTOWN, W.Va. (April 25, 2015) – Two goals from freshman forward Michaela Abam helped the West Virginia University women’s soccer team score a 3-2 win at Ohio State in its spring season finale this afternoon, at Jesse Owens Memorial Stadium, in Columbus, Ohio.
“Today was a good day. We had some silly breakdowns and Ohio State punished us, but overall this was a great end to the spring season,” Mountaineer coach Nikki Izzo-Brown said. “The whole team played a tough game, and we were able to finish enough chances. Three goals is a great effort against a team like Ohio State. We’ve been working on scoring chances, so I’m happy where we ended the spring.”
Abam netted the game winner in the 68th minute, connecting on a cross from junior forward Kailey Utley. Incoming freshman defender Easther Mayi Kith started the scoring sequence, sending a long ball to Utley, who beat a defender one-on-one before sending the cross to Abam.
After OSU took an early lead in the fourth minute, Abam knotted the score at 1-1 in the sixth minute, finishing a ball from incoming freshman Hannah Abraham.
Junior forward Kelsie Maloney gave WVU a one-goal advantage in the 18th minute, finishing a ball from Utley near post. The Buckeyes evened the score with eight minutes to go in the half off a one-time shot.
Utley had a chance to put WVU up 1-0 off a breakaway in the match’s first 30 seconds, but her shot went just wide of the net.
Redshirt-freshman Michelle Newhouse played all 90 minutes in goal for the Mountaineers.
With the win, WVU concludes its 2015 spring season with a 3-2 record.
