WVU to Play in Hall of Fame Women’s Challenge

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. (May 6, 2015) – The West Virginia University women’s basketball team will participate in the third annual Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame Women’s Challenge on November 22-29, 2015. The Mountaineers will trek to Spokane, Washington, to play three games at Gonzaga University before concluding the tournament at the Mohegan Sun Arena in Uncasville, Connecticut.

“It’s a great honor to be selected to participate in the Hall of Fame Women’s Challenge,” said coach Mike Carey. “We’re excited to play top-level competition and glad that we’re able to return to Bria Holmes’ home state of Connecticut during her senior season.”

The Mountaineers open the four-game tournament against the host Gonzaga Bulldogs on Sunday, November 22, in Spokane. Gonzaga reached the NCAA Tournament Regional Semifinals last season before falling to No. 2-seed Tennessee.

WVU then faces Pac-12 foe Southern California the next day on Monday, November 23, and closes out the three-game visit to Spokane with a matchup against Grand Canyon on Tuesday, November 24.

USC finished the 2014-15 season 15-15 overall and 7-11 in league play. The Lopes completed the year 13-14 and were 7-7 in the Western Athletic Conference (WAC).

The Women’s Challenge concludes with a one-day event at the Mohegan Sun Arena on Sunday, November 29. Senior Bria Holmes returns home to Connecticut when the Mountaineers square off against the Yale Bulldogs in a 4 p.m. tilt. The Bulldogs closed the 2014-15 campaign 13-15 overall and 7-7 in the Ivy League.

Teams scheduled to participate in this year’s Women’s Challenge tournament are: Farleigh Dickinson (Northeast), Gonzaga (West Coast), Grand Canyon (WAC), Iona (MAAC), North Carolina (ACC), Southern California (PAC-12), West Virginia (Big 12) and Yale (Ivy). WVU has never met any of the four scheduled teams on the hardwood.

“We are very excited to be hosting the third annual Women’s Challenge at Mohegan Sun” said John L. Doleva, President and CEO of the Basketball Hall of Fame. “The venue is unparalleled and the competitive atmosphere will serve the participating teams well as they head into the 2015-16 season.”

The Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) will continue to serve as the host conference for the annual event. The MAAC has developed a strong partnership with the Basketball Hall of Fame, including the addition of a MAAC exhibit in the Hall of Fame museum in Springfield, Massachusetts.

All proceeds from the Women’s Challenge will benefit the non-profit Basketball Hall of Fame in Springfield, Massachusetts. For more information on tickets, please log ontowww.hoophall.com/womenschallenge.
