MORGANTOWN, W.Va. (Oct. 19, 2024) Freshman Isaac Scheer scored the game-winner in the 89th minute for the No. 1 West Virginia University men’s soccer team in a 1-0 victory over South Carolina, Saturday at Dick Dlesk Soccer Stadium. The Mountaineers improve to 9-1-3 while South Carolina falls to 7-3-2.

West Virginia also improves to 4-0-1 in Sun Belt play and sit alone at the top of the standings with 13 points.

Scheer’s goal was the culmination of a strong Mountaineer attack all game as they outshot South Carolina, 20-4, although only held a slight 4-3 edge in shots on goal. The Mountaineers also took eight corner kicks compared to just one for the Gamecocks.

After a relatively uneventful first half, WVU came out the more aggressive team in the second half, taking 14 shots and earning four corner kicks.

The Mountaineers had a couple of chances to take the lead earlier in the second half but shots by graduate student Sergio Ors Navarro, sophomore Sam Nyenka, and freshman Braden Stevanovic ended up just off target.

The Gamecocks had a golden opportunity in the 70th minute with a 4-on-1 chance. Senior Dante Huckaby was the only defender left and came up big, knocking the ball off a South Carolina player and earn a goal kick.

In the 89th minute, Ors Navarro sent a ball toward the far post where senior Frederik Jorgensen was waiting to head it back toward frame. Scheer was there ready with his head as well to knock the ball into the open net for his second goal of the season.

South Carolina had a late chance in the 90th minute, earning a free kick from just outside the 18-yard box. The Gamecock player took a shot that went under the wall, but redshirt-senior Marc Bonnaire was there to make his second and most important save of the contest.

The Mountaineers will be back on the pitch, Wednesday, Oct. 23, against Georgia State. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m.
