Nikki Izzo-Brown’s West Virginia women’s soccer team remain at the top of the Big 12 standings.
WVU (9-2-2, 5-0-1 Big 12) defeated UCF (3-3-4, 1-2-2 Big 12) 1-0 Friday night in the Mountaineers’ annual “Pack it Pink” match at Dick Dlesk Soccer Stadium. Offense needs some work.
Both UCF and WVU tallied just one shot on goal apiece in a scoreless first half.
WVU’s second shot on goal of the night did not come until the 52nd minute of the match when Taylor White’s attempt from the right side of the penalty box was saved by UCF goalkeeper Sami Lipcon.
The effort was fruitless at the time, but it set off a sequence of events much in WVU’s favor.
The ball remained in the UCF zone, where the Knights then committed a foul in their own defensive territory. As WVU took possession, the ball circled to Mountaineers midfielder Lily McCarthy on the left wing, who fired popped up a shot from distance.
The attempt looked like it would be an easy save for Lipcon, but as she read the ball in the air, she slipped and fell. Luckily for the Knights, McCarthy’s attempt hit off the cross bar, but that luck did not last long.
WVU midfielder AJ Rodriguez was in perfect position for the rebound. Her ensuing shot then missed off target, but she was able to retain possession of the ball in bounds, and UCF made its biggest mistake of the night by committing a foul on a tackle attempt
The foul occurred in the penalty box, awarding WVU a penalty kick. Head coach Nikki Izzo-Brown sent McCarthy to the penalty spot.
Initially, Lipcon guessed correctly and made a save on McCarthy’s shot, but the ball deflected right back to McCarthy, who buried the rebound for the first goal of the game and a 1-0 WVU lead in the 55th minute.
WVU goalkeeper Mackenzie Smith recorded her fourth (4th) shutout win.
WVU will TCU on Thursday.
