Let’s look at the 2-loss teams ranked ahead of 7-1 West Virginia, which is ranked #16.

The most suspect ranking above the Mountaineers, I think, are for Virginia Tech at #14 with two losses to unranked teams.

Oklahoma State also lost to two unranked teams, but beat West Virginia.

My alma mater has #11 Oklahoma as the only ranked team left on its schedule. That isn’t going to move the needle much.

Wisconsin lost to #3 Michigan, #5 Ohio State but beat #19 Nebraska.

Texas A&M lost to #1 Alabama, unranked Mississippi State but beat #9 Auburn and #25 Arkansas.

Auburn lost to #2 Clemson and #8 Texas A&M. But still ranks #9.

Penn State lost to #3 Michigan and unranked Pitt but beat #5 Ohio State.

Oklahoma lost to unranked Houston and #5 Ohio State.

Colorado lost to #3 Michigan and #20 Southern Cal.

Oklahoma State lost to unranked Central Michigan and unranked Baylor but beat #16 West Virginia, 37-20.

Virginia Tech lost to unranked Tennessee and Syracuse. That’s a puzzler at #14.

Utah lost to unranked California and #4 Washington.

I think it was all but definite that given their starting position that Baylor and WVU only had a chance with an undefeated season. As seen 2 years ago with TCU, you need to have an impeccable resume to make the playoff to overcome the "big name" schools who will get the benefit of the doubt.

Until there is a real playoff for college football. Something similar to the NFL styled playoffs would be the best way to finally crown a true NCAA Champion. But until that day arrives there will always be bias.

The Mountaineers are having a great year so far but they are not a championship caliber type team this year. I'm ok with that because at least WVU is playing good football. The Mountaineers will be in a top tier bowl after the season. Recruiting is going well, Holgrosen is maturing into a very good HC and this team should finish in the top 3 of the Big XII.

That being said its still remotely possible The Mountaineers make it into the CFP. That would be great but if they don't. At least this season has been great. IMO

I'm with you as the only suspect one in the is Virginia Tech. I could argue with the other 13 teams ahead of us but think you can make a solid case against us as well.

One thing I realize reading your post is that WVU at the moment is lacking quality wins. BYU, Kansas State (4 losses and counting), and TCU (four losses and counting) are our best wins. That doesn't cut it especially when two of the three will most likely take at least 1 (probably two) more loss. We are what we are at this point, need to win a couple more.

Where is the quality wins for...
Louisville
Wisconsin
Auburn
Texas A&M
Oklahoma
Colorado
Oklahoma State (we are their signature win?)
Virginia Tech
Utah

WVU ranking is probably about right but I think they should be 13th behind Okie State and Oklahoma.

Go 11-1, win the league title, lock up a trip to New Orleans -- and anything better is gravy on the squirrel.

Wisconsin (LSU and Nebraska)
Louisville (Florida State)
Auburn (LSU, Arkansas, Ole Miss)
Texas A&M (Auburn, Arkansas, Tenn)
Oklahoma (similar to us just better losses)
Colorado (but could make an argument for us over them they did beat Stanford)
Oklahoma State (signature win like you said but they have a BS loss and they did beat us)
Virginia Tech (don't get this one at all)
Utah USC, Cal??? (again very similar resume just give the Pac 12 a slight edge I guess)
