Baseball Swept by No. 4 TCU

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. (May 3, 2015) – Another good pitching performance kept the West Virginia University baseball team off-balance as it fell 5-0 to No. 4 TCU on Sunday afternoon in front of 1,691 fans at Monongalia County Ballpark.

The Mountaineers (24-22, 6-12 Big 12) were swept by the Horned Frogs (37-9, 13-5 Big 12), and have now lost five in a row. West Virginia had five hits with three errors, while TCU scored five runs on nine hits with one error.

“We competed really well this weekend, the results didn’t work out, but I like the way we competed,” coach Randy Mazey said. “I’ve always told these guys that people’s true colors show up when things go wrong and we just got swept for the first time this season. Things have gone wrong, so now is the time you need to have pride and character, and hold your head up high. if you handle it the right way you’ll come out of it the right way.”

Despite taking the loss, sophomore right-hander Chad Donato (6-5) pitched another quality start, allowing three runs, two earned, on six hits with six strikeouts and two walks in seven innings.

TCU’s Alex Young threw eight-shutout innings, giving up just three hits with eight strikeouts and two walks.

TCU jumped out to an early 1-0 lead as Cody Jones led off the game with a single and then scored on a sacrifice fly to left field by Evan Skoug with two outs.

Dane Steinhagen reached on an error with two outs in the top of the third, stole second and then scored on a single through the right side by Nolan Brown to extend the TCU lead to 2-0.

Brown scored a run to make it 3-0 in the top of the sixth on a Garrett Crain bunt single back to the pitcher.

Crain picked up another RBI in the top of the eighth with a two-out single to center field, scoring Elliott Barzilli to make it 4-0.

Cody Jones scored to make it 5-0 in the top of the ninth on a fielder’s choice to second base by Connor Wanhanen.

Freshman second baseman Shaun Corso led the Mountaineers with two hits, including a double, while the Horned Frogs were led by Cody Jones’ three hits. Brown and Crain added two hits apiece for TCU.

West Virginia hits the road for four-straight contests beginning at Virginia Tech on Tuesday, May 5th. First pitch at English Field is set for 5:30 p.m.

The radio broadcast can be heard throughout the state on Mountaineer Sports Network from IMG affiliates with Jeff Culhane and Ernie Galusky on the call.
