MORGANTOWN, W.Va. (May 11, 2024) The West Virginia University baseball team shut out Kansas State, 13-0, Saturday evening at Kendrick Family Ballpark. The Mountaineers improve to 30-19 and 16-10 in the Big 12 while the Wildcats fall to 29-20 and 13-13 in conference play.

It is the third straight season and sixth in the last eight full seasons that the Mountaineers have reached the 30-win plateau. The 16 Big 12 wins also sets a new single-season program record.

On Senior Night, it was senior Derek Clark who shined brightest as he threw seven scoreless innings with 10 strikeouts while allowing just two hits. Freshman Joseph Fredericks and sophomore Luke Lyman each struck out a batter in an inning of work to complete WVU’s fifth shutout of the season, most in the Big 12.

At the plate, sophomore Sam White, junior JJ Wetherholt, and sophomore Logan Sauve all had two hits and a home run. White finished the night with five RBI while Sauve and Wetherholt each scored three times while also driving in multiple runs.

White opened the scoring in the third with a two-run single before executing a first-and-third double steal with Wetherholt to tack on a third run in the inning.

In the sixth, Wetherholt hit his fifth home run of the season, a 460-foot blast over the batter’s eye in centerfield.

Wetherholt collected another RBI an inning later with a single before White delivered the knockout blow with a three-run home run, his 10th of the season.

The Mountaineers added four more runs in the eighth as sophomore Skylar King had an RBI fielder’s choice before Sauve rocketed a three-run home run to put the finishing touches on the game.

After allowing an infield hit to the first batter of the game, Clark cruised, not allowing a another hit until the sixth inning. He had eight strikeouts through four innings and finished with 10 to match a season high.

The rubber game of the series is set for Sunday afternoon at 1 p.m.
