NASHVILLE, Tenn. (Feb. 24, 2025) Junior Sam White’s solo home run in the 10th inning proved to be the game winner on Monday as the West Virginia University baseball team completed the four-game sweep over Lipscomb with a 5-4 victory at Ken Dugan Field. The Mountaineers improve to 7-0 on the season while the Bisons fall to 2-5.

It is the best start to a season for West Virginia since beginning 7-0 in 1966 and just the seventh time in program history opening the season with seven straight wins.

White finished the day with two hits, including his first home run of the season, and three runs scored while freshman Gavin Kelly tallied two RBI.

Senior Reese Bassinger locked it down on the mound with 3.0 hitless innings to end the game, earning his first win of the season to go along with three saves. Senior Tyler Hutson tossed 2.2 scoreless innings with three strikeouts while junior Luke Lyman threw 1.1 scoreless innings of relief.

Lipscomb took an early lead on a two-run home run in the second inning. Kelly got one run back in the fourth with a sacrifice fly before two runs came around to score in the fifth as a potential double play ball off the bat of Kelly with the bases loaded went through the shortstop’s legs. The Mountaineers added a third run in the inning on a double play to make it 4-2 after six innings.

The Bisons evened up the game in the seventh with two runs, but graduate student Jack Kartsonas escaped a bases-loaded jam to prevent further damage.

Bassinger kept the game tied until White’s home run in the 10th inning. He walked one batter in the bottom of the inning but got a fielder’s choice to end the game.

The Mountaineers will bring their perfect record into the home opener on Wednesday afternoon against Ohio. First pitch from Kendrick Family Ballpark is set for 2 p.m.
