MORGANTOWN, W.Va. (March 25, 2025) – The West Virginia University baseball team picked up its 20th win of the season with a 7-0 victory over Marshall, Tuesday evening at Kendrick Family Ballpark. The Mountaineers improve to 20-3 on the season while the Thundering Herd fall to 12-13.
Redshirt junior Chase Swain had two hits, including a home run, two RBI and two runs scored on the night. Junior Skylar King also drove in two runs while sophomore Armani Guzman had two hits and an RBI.
On the mound, freshman David Hagen threw 4.0 scoreless innings while allowing just one hit and striking out one. Senior Tyler Hutson earned the win with a pair of strikeouts in 2.0 scoreless innings. Freshman Mac Stiffler, junior Robby Porco, freshman Bryant Yoak, and junior Ben McDougal closed out the game to complete WVU’s second shutout of the season.
The Mountaineers took a quick lead with a sacrifice fly from King in the first inning. Swain doubled the lead with his second home run of the season an inning later before West Virginia scored four in the third inning. King, Swain, and Guzman all had RBI singles in the frame while senior Jace Rinehart scored on a first-and-third double steal with King.
WVU added the extra point in the eighth on an RBI single from freshman Gavin Kelly.
The Mountaineer pitching staff lowered its ERA to 3.14 this season and is now allowing just 6.63 hits per nine innings, both of which were already top 10 in the nation entering the game.
West Virginia will hit the road for a three-game series at BYU beginning on Thursday, March 27. First pitch is set for 8:30 p.m. ET.
