MORGANTOWN, W.Va. (July 23, 2019) – The West Virginia University baseball team’s 2019 signing class has earned the highest ranking in program history, according to Perfect Game USA.

Following the outlet’s re-ranking of the class of 2019 based on players that signed to play professionally or chose to attend college, the Mountaineers ranked No. 21 nationally. It marks the first time WVU has ever been featured in the top 25 of the national recruiting rankings, and it topped the previous WVU-best ranking of No. 28 by the 2018 class.

Of the student-athletes signed on for the 2020 season, two were selected in the Major League Baseball First-Year Player Draft in June. Left-handed pitcher Daniel Batcher (Lakeland, Florida) was chosen in the 33rd round by the Toronto Blue Jays, while catcher/infielder Matt McCormick (Orland Park, Illinois) was a 40th-round pick of the Cincinnati Reds. Both have elected to enroll at WVU.

Perfect Game previously ranked the Mountaineers’ recruiting class No. 38 nationally in December.

Last month, West Virginia appeared in the season-ending national polls for the first time since 1982, finishing as high as No. 19 in the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association (NCBWA) poll. WVU also was No. 20 in the Baseball America top 25, No. 21 in the final D1Baseball rankings, No. 25 by Perfect Game and No. 27 in the Collegiate Baseball poll.

WVU tallied 38 wins, second-most in single-season team history, appeared in the program’s 13th NCAA Championship and was selected as a regional host for the first time since 1955.
