MORGANTOWN, W.Va. (Feb. 17, 2023) – With the team score tied heading into the final match of the dual, redshirt junior Michael Wolfgram scored a pin at heavyweight to lift the West Virginia University wrestling team to a 24-18 victory over Clarion, to conclude Senior Night in front of 1,121 passionate fans on Friday.
Wolfgram flipped Clarion’s Austin Chapman onto his back and managed to keep one leg inbounds to seal the fall in 2:16.
The Mountaineers (9-5) responded with an 18-0 run after Clarion (11-5) took a 9-0 lead to open the contest by winning the first two matches at 125 and 133 pounds.
Redshirt senior Alex Hornfeck gave West Virginia its first lead of the night, as he scored the first takedown of the match and ended it with a four-point nearfall to claim a 10-2 major decision over the Golden Eagles’ Trevor Elfvin at 157 pounds.
After junior Peyton Hall, ranked No. 12 in the country, captured a 19-4 technical fall to extend WVU’s lead to six (15-9), senior Scott Joll gained a 13-9 decision to close out five-match win streak for the home team.
Tyler Bagoly tied things up for Clarion in the 197-pound fight, but Michael Wolfgram took care of business against Chapman to wrap up the final home dual of the season.
Up next, the Mountaineers travel to battle Lock Haven in the regular-season finale on Sunday, Feb. 19, as they have a chance to join elite company as the sixth squad in program history to finish the year with ten wins. Dual time is set for 12 p.m. ET.
