those two opponents are 'world beaters" but then again neither are either of us! Tough!

With WVU it’s hard to tell what they’re going to do. The transfer portal cut deep in the defensive back field and who knows what we’ll see there. Holding steady on their productivity would be a huge plus.

On the other side of the ball, depth at running back is a huge need. The same quarterback that had to be benched in the bowl game seems to be the front runner so far. The line “should be better” and the only way to go up with with the wide receivers is up. With such a question mark at the QB position, road wins may be hard to produce.

I think you're right, coach. WVU's DBs have to be a concern, and knowing Maryland, they're going to test them from start to finish. The Terp QB is the younger brother of Tua Tagovailoa, and he's decent with both his arm and legs. WVU will have to get plenty of pressure on him up front to win this game, as well as score about 28-35 points themselves.

Think Navy running game will be too much for Marshall. Facing that triple option is a helluva bad way to start the season. I think if they're successful, and they typically are, then they'll eat up most of the clock, forcing Marshall into having to throw the ball more than they're probably comfortable in doing. Navy by 10.

Have to agree but hold out some degree of hope we can get them off the field and not let them "hog the ball".

The Naval Academy is a great place to go to watch a football game. Old stadium, but full of pageantry.

I went to the game when Dandy Don took his Mountaineers over there in 1998. Navy was no match for the cousins that particular fall afternoon.

I wish good luck for both teams, but with an unproven QB I think that WVU may be in a little trouble there. As for Marshall, I don't follow them closely enough to have an opinion on them vs Navy.

I thought WVU had the same QB they had last season, no? Doege or something like that?

The key to stop the option is playing assignment football and play your position. If the players buy in they have a chance. Having the summer to get the defense to play the right way will help down the road (position wise).

When WVU had the summer to prepare for the wishbone of Oklahoma in 82 (I think) I think they played better defensively that year than the previous. Not many plays they over ran and the stats improved from the previous year.

Just getting ready for Navy will help improve the team. My opinion.

Yes. The guy that saved the day in the bowl transferred out and I guess that youngster is not ready. I give Brown credit for having the guts to pull the guy.

...but saw Navy rip the Cousins a new asshole in Morgantown! Navy won't be a day at the beach for the Herd!

Navy really struggles on defense against teams that can throw the ball...but Wells is so schizo, I'm not sure that is us! Grant might throw for 500 yards in that tilt or throw 6 interceptions.

Depends which Maryland shows up. UMD has a history of playing great in Sept and then falling apart.
I saw them open last year with a game with Northwestern and if it was a prize fight would have been stopped but I think they got better as the years progressed but really what can we glean from the Covid year?

Navy kept WVU out of the Rose Bowl during another outstanding season 4-6.

50 (something) to 7 final, Navy at that time was ranked #9 with the soon to be Heisman trophy winner Roger Staubach at the wheel, or rudder.

That was in 1963.

I was think more about the 3 years prior to last when they opened with wins over Texas and in 2019 with a 63-20 win over Syracuse. They seemed to be talented all 3 years and fell apart due to injury or just general douchebaggery.

The guy that transferred out is currently on a retirement plan as well. Isn't he like 30 or 35?

He didn't have much choice. I don't think he knew where or who was.

Yes, Terps owned Herman!

I remember Roger the dodger as a Cowboy but not as a Middie, little before my time!

This is the 1964 Cotton Bowl
Video is a little shaky and there isn’t any commentary . Wasn’t too long after JFK assassination.
Definitely wasn’t Roger Staubach’s last appearance in Dallas.
If you switched QBs Texas might have won 45-0.

You'd best hope that no one from Marshall gets the bright idea to kidnap the goat like has been done so many times before...............that tends to piss off those midshipmen.
We'll leave those hijinks to the Black Knights of the Hudson! We'll be on our best behavior in Annapolis!

If I was a betting man , I'd say we'll both experience the agony of defeat!
We should beat Maryland. Depending on the spread I dont know about covering. Herd lost some key guys. I dont know enough about what is returning to know if they have a shot.

TrannyZandt will warn you not to take Maryland too lightly. It created a handful of Texas fan profiles because it was so embarrassed to be a WVU fan, only to see the Twerps paddle that steer a$$ in back-to-back seasons. It was too stupid not to pick the most underachieving football program in America as its fake favorite team.

We'll both be slight dogs on the road.
