I don’t know why I do comparative scores, which often are meaningless, but it’s in my DNA, so sue me!
Texas Tech is bi-polar. How can the Red Raiders lose, 42-27, to Mississippi, which lost to Alabama, 62-7, but beat Oklahoma State, 41-17? Maybe the Cowboys are overrated since they beat only Missouri State, Boise State and South Alabama. Not exactly something to toss your lasso and go yahoo! about.
WVU beat a Tennessee team that was almost respectable against Florida, 47-21, but Youngstown and this year’s Kansas State, 35-6 loser to Grier and Gibby’s defense, doesn’t feel as wowy as in previous years.
I can’t wait for noon Saturday watching TV on my Tallmadge, Ohio home couch to see what could be the offensive fireworks of the season in the Big 12 and maybe America.
If you have a lot of spare time, you can read the rest of my homework. Old sportswriters never die, they just keep looking for an angle to keep from getting bored between games.
Texas Tech
lost to Mississippi 47-27, which lost to Alabama (who doesn’t), but by 62-7.
beat Houston, 63-49
beat Lamar, 77-0
beat Oklahoma State, 41-17
West Virginia
Beat Tennessee, 40-14 after a 1.5-hour lightning delay at halftime.
Beat Youngstown, 52-17 during an all-game rain.
Lost to Hurricane Florence so North Carolina State game was canceled.
Routed Kansas State, 35-6, not letting a Bill Snyder offense score any touchdowns.
Tennessee
Lost to WVU, 40-14
Beat Texas-El Paso, 24-0. Nothing impressive.
Beat East Tennessee State, 59-3. Ho-hum.
Lost to Florida, 47-21. Not quite as bad as Tennessee losing to WVU, but close.
Youngstown
Lost to Butler, 23-21.
Beat Valparaiso, 42-7. So what?
Lost to WVU, 52-17. Bad mismatch.
Kansas State
Barely beat South Dakota State, 27-24. Really?
Lost to Mississippi State, 21-10. At least it was fairly close, not like when K-State played WVU. But it’s the same Mississippi State that lost, 31-10, to Kentucky. Kentucky!
Beat Texas-San Antonio, 41-17. As it should.
Lost to WVU, 35-6. Didn’t score a TD and Will Grier got to watch from the bench for nearly a full quarter.
Lamar Cardinals
Beat Kentucky Christian, 70-7
Lost to Northwest State, 49-48
Lost to Texas Tech, 77-0
Lost to Southeast Louisina, 30-24
Beating Lamar by any score isn’t impressive.
Mississippi
beat Texas Tech, 47-27
lost to Alabama, 62-7
beat Southern Illinois, 76-41
beat Kent State, 38-17
not impressive when you see the Alabama score. I know it’s Alabama but you need to be competitive to impress me.
Houston
Beat Rice, 45-27
Lost to Texas Tech, 63-49
Beat Arizona, 45-18
Beat Texas Southern, 70-14
Staying with Tech is impressive but not the other games.
Oklahoma State
Beat Missouri State, 58-17
Beat Boise State, 44-21
Beat South Alabama, 55-13
Lost to Texas Tech, 41-17
Whipping the Cowboys is something to hang Tech’s hat on. Not so much the other games.
