LEXINGTON, Ky. (June 5, 2023) – West Virginia second baseman JJ Wetherholt has been named to the Lexington All-Region Team after his standout play over the weekend.

In three games, the sophomore hit .538 (7-for-13) with a home run, two doubles, four RBI, and a stolen base. He also played sound defense at second, registering a 1.000 fielding percentage while making a couple of stellar plays.

Wetherholt started with a double on Friday night against Indiana before having three hits against both Ball State and Kentucky. Against the Cardinals, he hit his 16th home run of the season and drove in four runs in the victory.

With his three hits against the Wildcats, Wetherholt took over the national lead with a .449 batting average. It is the highest average by a Power Five player since Buster Posey hit .463 for Florida State in 2008 and is 17 points ahead of Dylan Crews of LSU, the highest of any player remaining in the 2023 NCAA Tournament, meaning Wetherholt is likely to become the first Mountaineer to ever lead the country in hitting.
