CHARLESTON, W.Va. — The state is offering free coronavirus testing in 10 counties beginning with Berkeley, Jefferson, Raleigh and Mercer counties Friday and Saturday.

The plan, developed by the Herbert Henderson Office of Minority Affairs, state DHHR and West Virginia National Guard, targets counties that have shown higher numbers of positive COVID-19 cases including among minority communities.

Gov. Jim Justice said he wants to give residents peace of mind.

“So if you just have any anxiety or whatever it may be and you think you ought to be tested, please come in and do so,” Justice said Thursday.

The testing is free to all residents in the selected counties even if they are showing no symptoms of the virus, Justice said.

“We are targeting these counties to open up that testing to be able to do a significant amount of testing in order to be able to make us one step better,” he said.

Other targeted counties include Cabell, Fayette, Kanawha, Marion, Mineral and Monongalia.

State DHHR Secretary Bill Crouch said he hopes the testing events will be well-attended.

“We look forward to testing as many people as we can,” he said. “As some of you may have noticed, we are pushing our testing very hard and trying to increase that significantly.”

Crouch said identification, such as a driver’s license or proof of address, is required at the testing sites. He said anyone under 18 will have to be accompanied by a parent or guardian.

Friday and Saturday testing schedule:

9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.

Martinsburg High School (Berkeley County)

Asbury United Methodist Church, 110 W. North Street, Charles Town (Jefferson County)

Bluefield State College, Bluefield, Harris-Jefferson Student Center Lower Parking Lot (Mercer County)

Raleigh County Commission on Aging, 1614 South Kanawha Street, Beckley

Testing for Cabell, Kanawha, Marion and Monongalia counties will be held May 22-23 with locations to be announced. Testing for Fayette, Mineral and a second period for Kanawha County will be held May 29-30.

Major General, state Adjutant General, Jim Hoyer said 70 members of the Guard will be working the testing sites Friday and Saturday.

U.S. Senators Joe Manchin and Shelley Moore Capito issued a joint news release Thursday announcing the state would receive $57.2 million from the CARES Act to be used for testing across the state.

Assisted Living testing

Crouch announced also announced Thursday testing had been completed at approximately three dozen Assisted Living facilities in West Virginia. Gov. Justice entered an executive order last week requiring all residents and staff to be testing. Crouch said there are a total of 94 licensed facilities to be tested.
