—A great feeling in the locker room after the game. They wish they could bottle that feeling up and sell it. The atmosphere was tremendous and he appreciated the fans.
—West Virginia has to punt the ball more consistently. They hit a big kickoff return on them and they had a penalty that moved the ball inside the ten. Staley did a great job on kickoffs with four touchbacks. He was really good on kickoffs and Casey Legg drilled a 44-yarder. Punt coverage was good and they affected the missed Virginia Tech field goal.
—Virginia Tech converted several third and longs. That can’t happen. But sudden change defense was tremendous. Red zone wise they’ve been really good in the red zone and created negative plays overall.
—Offensively turnovers have been the issue. They haven’t done a good job taking it away and their -5 on the season in turnover margin. They couldn’t put the game away and had two critical penalties. The one at the end of the game was big as well as the holding when they were driving. A positive has been the fast start and there was several big plays and they averaged 5.2 yards per carry.
—Offensive lineman of the week was Zach Frazier, blue collar award is somebody that does the work behind the scenes was Doug Nester. Special teams award went to Evan Staley and Casey Legg. Defensively Jared Bartlett was named there by the coaches. Offensive player of the week was Leddie Brown. Scout team players of the week on offense was Tomas Rimac and defensively Brayden Dudley and special teams was Eli Archer.
—Huge challenge heading to Oklahoma. They’ve won the Big 12 six times in a row. It’s a great opportunity for the program. On special teams their specialists are all-American candidates. They do a great job blocking punts and offensively they do a great job. Bill Bedenbaugh does a great job with their offensive line and their gap run schemes. They might have the best receiver group in the country and a great tight end. It will be the biggest challenge all year and that doesn’t even the Heisman trophy candidate at quarterback. On defense they have difference makers up front and Alex Grinch has done a great job of stabilizing that unit overall. Experienced at linebacker and at safety as well. They’ve got a great feel for the system and it’s a challenge in all three phases.
—The red zone defense is something that wasn’t a strength two years ago. They were really good at Troy and it’s something they’ve emphasized since going back to spring of 2020. They do some kind of red zone work good on good everyday. Offensively their numbers are misleading because of what happened at LIU. As far as the takeaways, one of the strengths of the unit last year. They have to do a better job recovering fumbles because there is an art to that. They’re falling right out top of the ball and you have to go from the side. They have to do a better job getting their eyes on some downfield throws which will help. They’re going to do some things in practice to help that.
—Bartlett had a great summer and a good fall camp and he just didn’t play as well the first two games. He didn’t have a good feel and last week he had some really good practices last week. He lost a brother this summer to a freak accident and once that happened he has had a renewed focus and a seriousness about his preparation.
—When Legg filled in for Staley in 2019 and had some high points. Legg is really even keeled and No moment is too small for him. He’s really worked and he earned the starting job by making kicks in fall camp. He earned the job and has been really consistent.
—They let Bartlett straight rush more on Saturday and he did a really good job understanding dip and drive technique. He asked for it and they ran some line stunts with him.
—You have to get movement interior wise in order to get pressure off the edge. Akheem Mesidor is playing at an extremely high level. He is getting vertical push on the pocket so there isn’t any room to move up.
—Junior college players in their second year are much improved and that’s the case for Jackie Matthews. Part of that is he’s worked with Addae and Young to put himself in a good spot. He has an improved mental approach. He plays one speed and is one of the best strikers they have.
—Rattler has unique arm talent. He has one of the strongest arms and quickest releases that he’s seen since he’s been doing it.
—West Virginia played a lot of 12 personnel. O’Laughlin played 39 snaps. He will continue to get better and he was a factor. They ran the football better because of him and how the offensive line played.
—There is only so many reps to go around and there is very little cross over with the two quarterbacks. You have to keep everything for the offensive line the same. They protected pretty well against Virginia Tech but you can’t ask them to do a lot of different things schematically. You have to present something different for the defense with each quarterback. Greene did some really good things and a couple that weren’t so good. He can throw it and there is a science to playing both and they’re figuring.
—Jaylen Anderson is cleared and is working out. This is a redshirt year for him and they’re trying to get him for a successful start and get him ready for January.
—West Virginia will continue to play both quarterbacks and they’ve been good for each other in the room. They’re both close.
