--Brown said it was fun to be out there Saturday. Defensively, the negatives were the three explosive pass plays and the missed takeaway situations. They have to do a better job getting all 11 guys rallying to the football. Positively there were very few missed assignments and held them to 1-11 on third down. A total of 13 of the 49 total plays were negative. On offense perimeter blocking was just O.K., and they weren’t able to convert on third and short and score in the red zone with a missed field goal. They started fast on offense and were able to get ahead. The most disappointing part was Saturday due to penalties because they can’t beat themselves. They had six penalties on that side of the ball and the kickoff coverage team allowed a touchdown although it was called back while the field goal protection wasn’t good. They did a good job downing the punt inside and one and won the field position battle.

--Special teams player of the week was Alonzo Addae. Offensive lineman of the week was Mike Brown graded out 87-percent and had the highest production rate. Tony Fields was the defensive player of the week with how he flew around. The offensive player of the week was Leddie Brown. He had zero runs with negative yardage on the day which was a focus. The new award is the blue collar award and that goes to a player that does behind the scenes work that doesn’t show up on the stat sheet. That goes to Jackson Knipper. Scout team players of the week were quarterback Trent Jackson on offense, outside linebacker Lanell Carr on defense and Quamazeius Mosby on special teams. The juice squad award goes to Evan Matthes for getting the team fired up.

--Brown felt like they played everybody that was ready to play in the game. He’s sure they missed a player or two, but they got a lot of guys in and got them good work. Jordan White played all but 2 snaps in the second half and they think he’s going to be a big factor in the future.

--Brown said the comfort level with the offensive line is improving. He was impressed with what Zach Frazier did early and how he prepared during the week. Brandon Yates did a nice job. He has to be more consistent but he is a guy that has a lot of potential but he’ll continue to play and get better. They have to continue to improve that they are better. That’s the biggest challenge. Brown felt the physicality was good at times but other times has to be better, but they did show some signs.

--A’Varius Sparrow did not play and was dressed they just choose not to play him. They wanted to see if Tony Mathis was ready to have that third running back role.

--The next two weeks are big for linebacker Tony Fields and they are looking to get confidence in what they are running with him. He didn’t have many missed assignments though in his first action.

--VanDarius Cowan mentally and physically is in as good of spot as he has been in but he needs to be more consistent. He had a penalty on a late hit that shouldn’t happen and the ending impact was a three-point, 50-plus yard drive. But he was active and showed up.

--Leddie Brown is the starter but Alec Sinkfield had a productive camp and has been a considerably different player than he has been. He took coaching and wanted to know what he had to do to get on the field and he got some detailed things and did that. He’s been better in space and better with finishing runs which is going to get him more touches.

--How they evaluated them in this game and moving forward is did they play at the effort that they demand, where they physical and did they do what they were asked? Production plays a role but those are the three things they evaluate.

--Brown said they had a recruiting meeting yesterday and today and will spend more time on it today. They have gotten more practice film and workout film to evaluate more than they normally would. Brown misses the live evaluations but the good thing is everybody is on the same playing field. They are active recruiting not only 2021 but 2022. They are a little behind compared to schools that aren’t playing.

--Brown hasn’t gotten anything on any transfer waivers yet.

--Sam Brown had been productive in camp and wanted to make a point, but he played better than he thought they would. All preparation does is provide opportunities. He had shown some flashes but he really demonstrated he could do it. He’s excited about it.

--Brown thought the timing was O.K. but they need to place the ball in some good spots.

--Sam James missed some practice time, so he felt like the people that practiced deserved it.

--Sean Martin missed the game due to contact tracing. They wanted him to play but they couldn’t and they liked the makeup and how he works. He’s going to be a real bright spot.
