--Offensive coordinator Gerad Parker said the goal is to run the football better every week. He tries to keep a blind eye to the numbers but wants there to be production. The indirect effect of running the ball well is going to limit Oklahoma State’s opportunities with the offense as well.

--Parker has a strong opinion of Jarret Doege. He has worked hard and was part of his accountability team in the off-season, so he was able to get an idea of what he was all about. They’ve had a lot of leadership discussions and he worked a lot on his feet and staying balanced throughout his throws. He does a good job of staying poised and doesn’t get too high or too low. He has been able to push buttons when he needs to and communicate with his teammates which allows you to take those next steps at the quarterback position overall.

--The Oklahoma State third down numbers are great, and he knows the personality of their defensive coordinator well because he worked with him for a year at Duke. They are going to be physical and grab and try to make things tough especially on third down. Three things that jump out is the length at cornerback and the safeties that understand how to fit the run.

--Parker said it will be critical for his receivers to win junction point and against man coverage. The matchup is going to be critical for the success for West Virginia in this game offensively. This is a huge test this early in the year, but the Mountaineers will have an idea of where they stand at receiver.

--The reality across college football is that COVID-19 has to force contingency plans. They do a lot through the week to get a good feel and work on the prevention of it all. They try to stick to the protocols to prevent it from happening but if it does, they have a plan on how to proceed. They all understand that this can flip in a hurry so it’s always looming.

--Nothing happens by accident. If they want to be good at explosive plays, they have to try to be good at them. They have to win that battle if they want to have success.

--You feel better about the tight ends being able to do a few more things which allows them to be creative in the run game as well as with play action. They are going to try to continue to grow that there and bring them along.

--They did a great job on defense and had a very good game last week. They move around up front with angles and slants to mess with the run fits. There is a respect for their personnel and their schemes. They penetrate gaps and are able to record tackles for loss which really create issues. They have to reduce those negative plays if they want to have success on the offensive side.

--Parker thinks that West Virginia players will be excited to see fans in the stands. They haven’t spent a lot of time on it because it will be a reduced crowd, but it will be good to see people in the stands.

--Defensive line coach Jordan Lesley believes that what Oklahoma State has personnel wise stresses where you want to place the emphasis. You have to pick your spots and you’re probably never going to be right 100-percent of the time. They have a lot of talent and speed which makes it tough.

--You have to prepare for a little bit of everything the best you can with the quarterback situation.

--Lesley thinks they were just OK up front. He takes every first game with a grain of salt because there are jitters and they have some guys that are going to get people’s attention. The guys around them have to do more to buffer it and those guys have to learn to deal with the attention. That’s part of being a good player at this level of college football.

--To stop the run, it has to be a combination between the defensive line and the linebackers fitting where they’re supposed to. You’re going to have defensive linemen make standout plays but sometimes you’re going to run yourself out of the play and the second level has to take over.

--The Oklahoma State offensive line group should be much improved. Game speed is different. Tulsa played hard in that game and created issues. Tempo is something you have to prepare for, but coach Brown gives them a lot of good looks on scout team. They snapped it almost within six seconds multiple times, so they have to prepare for it. Tempo makes you focus in on what you’re trying to do, and you have to have it communicated to be able to stop it and prevent it from going.

--Lesley has guys on the sideline that will help identify and have substitutions ready if Oklahoma State is able to get their tempo going.

--You have to prepare for the run/pass first with the quarterbacks because you have to spend the most energy there.

--Jeff Casteel has been great. If you look back to all the teams and leagues, he has a ton of experience with identifying personnel and everything else. His background and being a coordinator and calling it as well as the positions he’s coached gives him such a feel for the game and where teams are attacking.

--Secondary coach Jahmile Addae wasn’t pleased with some of the spots of the cornerback play in week one. They want to be cleaner. They know the biggest improvement comes between week one and week two so that’s what they want to do.

--Alonzo Addae was always a kid who was motivated. He was always calling and begging to have the West Virginia games on television. He has had quite a few stops in between and following his story he saw some clips and was impressed with what he was able to do. They were fortunate enough to get him when he made himself available and it’s been pretty cool to see.

--Oklahoma State tempos for a season to try to catch them off guard or in the wrong spot. They go through their every play ritual as fast as they can. It seems easy but it can go array when its in a tempo situation in a live football game. They just have to be disciplined in that ritual and they work a fast tempo offense, so they have to be aligned and ready to meet the match. The change in personnel helps you because it allows the refs to slow things down. Tempo creates its own issues and defenses have to do the same thing in order to counteract that which means being aligned and ready to play.

--Addae said you’re watching high school tape of inexperienced quarterbacks to get an idea of their skill set and what they have been able to do at that level. If you don’t have that you have to try to dig and build a portfolio that you can use to defend him.

--You want to play all of the guys that you’re comfortable winning with. Nicktroy Fortune, Dreshun Miller and Jackie Matthews are those guys for him right now. It’s his job to put them in a position to get that done and that’s what they will be working on this week.

--Daryl Porter has come along a lot faster than most freshman cornerbacks and is never too high or never too low. He’s worked his butt off to get it done.
