MORGANTOWN, W.Va. (Dec. 10, 2023) – Led by a season-high 25 points by junior guard JJ Quinerly, the West Virginia University women’s basketball team collected its ninth straight win of the season by defeating Delaware State, 107-43, on Sunday afternoon, inside the WVU Coliseum in Morgantown.

Quinerly filled the stat sheet, recording her second career double-double, with a career-high 12 assists. The Norfolk, Virginia native also added eight rebounds and seven steals, to flirt with a quadruple-double. Her steals mark another career high as she led WVU in points, assists, rebounds and steals in the game.

The Mountaineers broke the century mark for just the 25th time in program history and the first since scoring 101 points against Coppin State on Dec. 10, 2017. That season WVU hit the 100-point mark three times. The 107 points scored against the Hornets is the sixth most in program history.

Five additional Mountaineers joined Quinerly in double figures. Senior forward Kylee Blacksten produced a season-high 16 points and sophomore guard Jordan Harrison added 13. Blacksten added five rebounds as Harrison dished out six assists.

Fifth-year seniors Jayla Hemingway and Tavy Diggs and junior guard Tirzah Moore each recorded 10 points. Moore added six boards and Diggs finished with five. Fifth-year senior Lauren Fields tacked on five steals in the contest to help the Mountaineers to 17 for the contest.

Offensively, West Virginia (9-0) shot 41-of-68 (60.3%) from the floor and scored 68 of its points in the paint to pull away from Delaware State (2-7). The Mountaineers outscored the Hornets by 50 points from the high percentage area.

Defensively, the Mountaineers forced 25 turnovers and held Delaware State to 16-of-53 (30.2%) from the field. It marks the eighth time this season WVU has forced an opponent into 21 or more turnovers in a game. Additionally, WVU cashed in 37 points off DSU’s turnovers and tallied 17 steals. West Virginia has now recorded 15 or more steals in five of eight games this season.

The Mountaineers added a 47-27 advantage on the glass, grabbing 31 defensive rebounds and a season-high 16 offensive rebounds that resulted in 17 second-chance points.

West Virginia scored 37 points in the opening quarter to tie the program record for points in a quarter. WVU also accomplished the feat in 2018 against Niagara. The Mountaineers also recorded nine steals in the frame, which are the most in program history over a 10-minute span.

Next up, West Virginia plays host to Wright State on Monday, Dec. 18, inside the WVU Coliseum in Morgantown. The contest against the Raiders is set for 10 a.m. ET and will be broadcast on Big 12 Now. Additionally, fans can listen to the game on the Mountaineer Sports Network.

I'm not much into Women's basketball but that team is fun to watch. Can we get some Kellogg for the men's team?
