Huggins Announces Final Recruit in Early Signing Period

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. (November 15, 2016)– West Virginia University men’s basketball coach Bob Huggins has announced that Wesley Harris has signed a national letter of intent for the 2017-18 academic year.

Harris, a 6-foot-8, 200-pound forward from Jackson, Mississippi, currently attends Lawson State Community College in Birmingham, Alabama, where he plays for coach Delvin Maston.

As a freshman, he attended Northeast Mississippi, where he averaged 18.2 points and 8.4 rebounds per game. Harris shot 47.1 percent from the field and 34.9 percent from 3-point range. Harris had a season-high 27 points against East Mississippi Community College on March 5. Harris was named to the All-Region 23 team and was an all-state selection.

“Wesley is very physically talented player, who will add significant athleticism to our front line, Huggins said. “He will run and jump as well as anyone in our league. He also shoots the 3 extremely well, which will further enable us to extend defenses.”

In high school, Harris led Callaway High to four consecutive state championships in Mississippi. As a senior, he averaged 10.3 points and 6.1 rebounds per game.

Harris joins Teddy Allen (Mesa, Arizona/Boys Town High [Omaha, Nebraska]), Derek Culver (Boardman, Ohio/Warren G Harding HS), D’Angelo Hunter (Louisville, Kentucky/Navarro College [Corsicana, Texas]/Pleasure Ridge Park HS) and Brandon Knapper (South Charleston, West Virginia/Hargrave Military Academy [Chatham, Virginia]/South Charleston HS) in the 2016-17 recruiting class.

“With the significant losses to graduation we have had over the past two years, it is important to bring in some maturity as well as continue to increase our athleticism for our style of play,” Huggins said. “We believe we have addressed those needs.”
