The signal thing is interesting on a couple of levels.
Yes, it's a nothing burger today. It could have been an op by either side. But the biggest thing to understand is that 8 years ago or 16 years ago, this would have toppled/handicapped administrations. This is how they used to do it. Now it looks so amateurish with social media and the internet in the mix.
But before this is how they did stuff to politically harm people. Gen Flynn case is a good example.
Intel community does something. They have their friends in the media push the story. The media goes into attack mode. Heads of departments testify under oath. Media calls them liars. Demands their resignation. The story goes on and on for days, weeks as media and Intel community adds more smoke. Pressure grows from population/voters ( by them using the false theory tonfool the voters that where there is smoke there is fire), and finally, people step down or are forced out. The admin enters a period of chaos as replacements are named and have to face congressional testimony under advice and consent....
The end result is that the admin is weakened or fatally stalled for the rest of the term.
Today, not so much. People see it for themselves. The admin has a chance to go over the media gatekeepers present their spin on the event...blah, blah, blah, and two days later no one cares as teams are drawn and people rally to their teams side.
