MORGANTOWN, W.Va. (July 24, 2017) – A program-best 10 West Virginia University gymnasts were named Scholastic All-Americans for the 2016-17 academic year, as announced by the National Association of Collegiate Gymnastics Coaches/Women (NACGC/W).
The 10 honors match the program record first established in 2007 and again earned in 2011. Since 1987, Mountaineer gymnasts have earned 130 NACGC/W Scholastic All-America awards.
As a team, WVU ranked No. 25 nationally and tops among Big 12 schools with a team grade point average (GPA) of 3.4935
“I’m thrilled for the Mountaineers to be ranked among the top 25 schools nationally for academics, too,” WVU coach Jason Butts said. “We’re honored to lead the Big 12 Conference academically in women’s gymnastics. Our student-athletes work just as hard in the classroom as they do in the gym, and these awards are a testament to their dedication to the academic success of this program, as well as their futures outside of gymnastics.”
Junior Carly Galpin (elementary education) and sophomore Abby Kaufman (exercise physiology) were among 100 honorees to earn the award with a 4.00 GPA. It is the first career recognition for both.
Four Mountaineers earned their second career honors: graduate Brooklyn Doggette (child development and family studies), senior Robyn Bernard (exercise physiology) and juniors Kirah Koshinski (communication studies) and Jaquie Tun (graphic design).
In addition to Galpin and Kaufman, graduate Alexa Goldberg (athletic coaching) and sophomore Julia Merwin (sport and exercise psychology) also received their first career accolades.
Graduate Mackenzie Myers (sociology) capped her four years with the Mountaineers with her fourth career award, while former WVU gymnast Rachel Sine (exercise physiology) received her third honor.
To qualify for the NACGC/W Scholastic All-America award, a gymnast must have a GPA of 3.50 for either the preceding academic year or have a cumulative GPA of 3.50 or higher at the nominating institution.
The NACGC/W is the national association for women’s collegiate gymnastics coaches. The association seeks to actively manage and develop the sport of women’s gymnastics at the collegiate level and works with the NCAA and USA Gymnastics in order to provide the best possible experience for student-athletes.
