The Battle is on...

The Sun Belt is targeting Southern Miss, Marshall and Old Dominion from Conference USA along with FCS James Madison, as first reported by The Athletic's Chris Vannini.

Conference USA believes it can add James Madison and FBS independent Liberty inside of the next two weeks if details can be worked out, sources tell Dodd. Should C-USA succeed with those additions, it's believed Marshall and Old Dominion would be apt to stay in a nine-team league with C-USA only losing Southern Miss.

If the Sun Belt were to poach the three schools from Conference USA, it would leave the latter with just five member institutions, bringing it below the level to reach NCAA qualification for Division I championships. However, beating the Sun Belt for 2016 FCS champion JMU could be the key piece that keeps Conference USA alive long term.

That's like reading a piece from the Onion.

If Marshall is that stupid to stay on that sinking ship, then WV should kick them out of the state.

C-USA, which morphed into the American, is all about having teams in major metropolitan areas (for the most part). Herd doesn't fit their mold, nor does Southern Miss. Most of the teams in the American have no big fanbase, outside of maybe East Carolina and Navy. Most have empty seats. C-USA then continued to follow that model in C-USA II. Failure once more. Herd should just do the right thing, and join the Patriot League or the Southern Conference. Those two leagues are probably as good as whatever remains in C-USA. Keep in mind, it was hard to get decent players based on how shitty the conference currently is. With this mess, you'll take an even bigger hit. This is why the Sun Belt has become a better league than C-USA over the last few years.

WKU and Middle Tennessee State being courted by MAC.

Both schools add a lot of power in Basketball. Since 2010 MTSU has been to the dance three times, twice getting to the round of 32. WKU has twice been to the round of 32 since 2000 and has a handful of appearances.

This would enhance MAC hoops, add some nice recruiting grounds, and put CUSA out of it’s misery.

Just read where there's two options for stupid Herd.

1. Join Sun Belt with Southern Miss, but Herd also wants to bring along Old Dominion and JMU
2. Stay put, lose Southern Miss, WKU takes Herd spot in Sun Belt, and JMU joins C-USA

How damn stupid are people? Does Herd realize people from Virginia have been making fun of West Virginia since 1863? But yet, Herd wants to take care of two low-life programs.

Would be better off giving up sports, and just focus on men's soccer. Bunch of morons.

I think it is laughable and untrue that the AAC did not in some way reach out to these 6 schools. Almost guaranteed that they did, probably through back channels that they wanted schools located in a major market. Miami-FAU, Birmingham-UAB, Charlotte-UNCC, Houston-Rice, Dallas-UNT, San Antonio-UTSA

Surely the Herd coaches do not want to stay in CUSA. But then again they would dominate it. They would also be successful in the New CUSA named the AAC when the top teams bolt.

They do not realize the Sun Belt is their best option for growth and recruiting in south would be an added plus for them.

I don't think they realize anything. Woke leaders probably aren't even aware they have sports teams. But, you're right, Herd might be able to dominate a 5 team league consisting of JMU, ODU, FIU, and GFYM

It would also weaken their program even further. It's why they should jump to SBC. Unless they're scared.
