Short memory - Nehlen had 4 or more losses in all but one year in the Big East.

RRod came close (5 points) from taking a Big East team to a national title game with a loss.... ....two BETTER Big 12 teams couldn't even make the new playoffs.

Say what you will... ...but it seems the old BE got respect... .....seemingly even more than the current Big 12.

With the addition of the 12th gimme game, the only fair way to compare records/season is losses per season. One win should not count as a factor.

And since you are comparing the Big 12 of today with the Big East of the 90s, if you look at end of the season rankings for the 90s, the Big East had almost identical percentages of top 25 teams as current Big 12. The Big 12 is a great conference but it's not any stronger than Nehlen's Big East. And since joining the Big 12, Dana took over an established program and has averaged more losses than Nehlen did having taken over a program without a solid win in four years.

In addition, to even compare what Dana has done for WVU in his first five years compared to what Don Nehlen did in his first five years at WVU is beyond ridiculous. They are not in the same league.

The only benefit is to make excuses for Dana by virtue of tearing down the rich tradition of our history.

But I still say that if Dana coaches us to win six straight to finish the season at 9-4, I'll take that every year. I don't consider that mediocrity. I wish we could do better than 4 losses, but you don't fire a guy at WVU for losing just four games. Just my opinion.

good point. I've mentioned before the strength of that league also in '06 & '07. 1-loss WVU was headed to the national title game before it was upset in '07. a year prior, WVU, L'Ville & Rutgers were each national title contenders into October. They each finished with 11 or more wins and AP top 12.

just not sure what the goal is to tear down the old conference and say we played no one. diminishes our own accomplishments.

The acc gets more respect than the big 12 today.
The old BE of the 90's was much more respected.
The BE version 2 gets as much respect as the big 12 today. Until Tx and Ok get back into the national picture this will be the case.

When all else fails, begin blasting former coaches to justify why the current MEDIOCRE coach isn't "that bad" after all. Yeah....smart game plan.

Right. Not same league. In fact, WV was not in a league at all at that time.

But they did register wins over Oklahoma, TCU, Colorado State, Florida, Kentucky and Louisville in that stretch along with traditional eastern wins over Penn State, Pitt, BC, VPI, Syracuse, Maryland and Virginia, among others.

Big 12 now vs Big East comparisons are not the same league either. However, that's what's up for discussion.

The discussion also took a turn to compare Dana vs Don head-to-head. One coached at WV for 20 years. The other is wrapping up his 5th such season. Trying to compare them is beyond ridiculous unless looking at an equal sample size - their initial five years of work taking over the program & building it up with their own players. That's the only way to remotely draw conclusions in such a staggered comparison.

the only reason WV is in the BXII is because of what WV did in the Big East.

it's the accomplishments of the program under Nehlen, Rodriguez and Stewart that earned the invite to join the BXII.
