I saw Rod Hundley play for the Charleston Reds against my school,
Spencer. I saw him play freshman ball at WVU when some of the crowd
would go home after the freshman game. Make no mistake, Rod Hundley was a
great player. It is also my opinion that he was a very complicated
person. By Rods own admission he could have been much better if he had
trained harder and partied less. In his book " You Gotta Love It Baby"
he tells the story of a man asking Rod to buy him a beer. When Hundley
ask him why he wanted him to buy him a beer the man replied "so I can
say Rod Hundled bought me a beer". I was acquainted with Rod Hundley and
he never bought me a beer, but I can say he bought me coffee at the old
Mountain-leer. One of my most prized possessions is a copy of " You
Gotta Love It Baby" autographed "Ed Good to see you again Rod Hundley".
When I am gone, it will belong to my grand daughter who is a basketball
player. Rod Hundley has finally found the peace that he so richly
deserves.
