Good deal for us. He should far exceed those numbers in terms of production. And for anyone who questions that, 3.5M in base pay before bonuses is likely lower than any other big 12 coach, so yes we got him cheap.

That’s a fair contract. I particularly like the increased pool for assistants and support staff. Nice job Rich and Wren. Let’s make it payoff with some wins.

@bgregory74 saud he wasn’t making 3.5.

Are we already late on that relocation stipend? ; )

Assistant coach pool of at least 5 million…how does that compare to the current spending
  • Offensive coordinator Chad Scott's salary increased from $575,000 to $700,000 for this season, with a further rise to $725,000 next season.
  • Offensive line coach Matt Moore's pay went up from $440,000 to $525,000 this year, and $550,000 next year.
  • Wide receivers coach Bilal Marshall saw his salary jump from $200,000 to $250,000 this season and $300,000 the following year.
  • Tight ends coach Blaine Stewart's salary increased from $200,000 to $225,000 for the next two years.
  • QB coach Tyler Allen has a salary of $200,000 for the next two years.
Defensive Coaches:

  • Defensive coordinator Jordan Lesley's salary increased from $750,000 to $775,000 this year and will reach $800,000 next year.
  • Secondary coach ShaDon Brown's salary went from $450,000 to $500,000 this year, with a further increase to $525,000 next year.
  • Inside linebackers coach Jeff Koonz’s salary rose from $400,000 to $450,000 this year, and $475,000 the next.
  • Defensive line coach AJ Jackson's pay increased from $355,000 to $400,000 this year, with an additional rise to $425,000 next year.

Presumably most of this difference will go to DC. A great DC costs a mil and change.

A fair contract to both parties, IMO which only matters to me. LOL.

A bit different incentive payouts then was first reported on here for Rich, that looked like a copy of the one Matt Campbell was getting at ISU before his latest contract.

So With RR getting a $3,500,000 salary his first year if you include the $1,250,000 WVU is paying Jax State it will cost WVU $4,750,000 to have just RR himself (Not including the higher paid staff) here for 2025. After 2025 with his slight increase in salary, and even if he earns some incentives, what it costs WVU to have Rod here goes down from 2025.
Edit: I forgot the relocation stipend of $100,000. That make the 2025 amount in total $4,875,000.

No big deal, just an observation.

If we keep Scott, Stewart, and Jackson which it seems like we are, that's an extra $75,000.

That leaves $700,000 to play with.

I agree, a top notch DC like Alley is going to command $1.2 I'd imagine. That's $425k over Lesley right there.

But that still gives us $375k MORE than what we were paying previous assistants to spread out over the remaining 6 positions. If we're in a spot where our lowest paid assistants are pulling in almost $300k, that's a great spot IMO.

Of course, this changes a bit if Scott isn't retained as the OC, because the next OC we bring in will likely require a salary equal or close to the DC, but I'm sure they know what they're doing.

I would say that’s highly unlikely. Rich is the head coach and OC, there’s no reason to pay an OC remotely what the DC will be payed. If I had to guess, whoever gets the “OC” title will be in the 600–750k range.

If Alley is the DC I’d guess he makes $1.25-1.5M

If Johnson is the DC I’d guess he makes $750k-1M

I don’t understand how these contracts are written.

When 5 or 6 wins gets you a bowl, why should you get a bonus for that? Shouldn’t that be the minimum for doing your job at $3.5 million per year.

But the opposite should be true too. The bonuses in here look pretty piddly for winning a conference championship.

If you win the Big 12, you are going to the Playoff so you probably deserve $500k or so.

I know it’s not just WVU but the contracts just seem out of alignment for incentivizing success as opposed to just paying for minimum results like Brown.

Must be nice to get $200,000 for your first real coaching job. Maybe that is market but given the level of experience that a lot of these guys had before being added to staff it seems like we were over paying.
