He loves him some Rich Rod, so is that what he is referring to? Rich Rod is also the top candidate for the UCF job and could use that as leverage, which could hurt his chances. Of course he sits next to Nick Saban, but does he come back after only 1 year?

I don't see "special" being someone who does not have specific ties to WVU football or a football "legend". If it's the OC at Penn State or Odom at UNLV, that's not "special".

Should be a fun couple of days.

I think some of his comments are hyperbole. Just like GG running wild. He's hyping the program and thankfully so. I’m not sure he has an inside scoop as of the time of that post to know one way or another, but I could be wrong.

Where do you see that Rich is the top candidate for the UCF job? I have looked at a few articles naming candidates for that job and his name is not listed.

Since when does McAfee do the hiring at WVU?

He could also be talking about Saban. Possibly could just be babbling at the mouth as he usually does.

The only way I see it happening is if Ken Kendrick tells WVU to hire him back. Is it possible? Maybe. I just doubt it will
I just hope whoever gets it is the guy that Baker wants. I hope his arm doesn't get twisted into hiring someone that some influential booster wants.

Whoever it is I'm behind them even if it's not one of the guys I would choose. Rich Rod, I just can't see it at all being realistic, but if it is he has my full support. Same with Jimbo. Same with Schumann, the PSU OC, etc, etc.

Doesn't seem like Baker decided who to hire a month ago like oceantide83 says. Sounds like a full blown process is playing out right now with plenty of candidates.

Negotiations could be occurring with new coach now or they are in a conference title game. Perhaps even preparing for a playoff game. It's hard to tell. But you can guarantee they want it wrapped up soon. But wanting and getting are 2 different things.

If he (Baker) immediately came out and said "here's your new coach", then Brown could have his lawyer go after WVU for breach of contract or other items, because it would potentially show that WVU admins were already searching for a new coach while still employing one, same way a coach isn't supposed to be able to do the same to find a new job while still under contract (yes, it happens....but usually there's a little grace period and a lot of lying). I still believe that the decision was made after the K-State game and that is when the candidates, and future head coach, began behind the scenes discussions and negotiations.

You're right wanting and getting are two different things. Thats what annoys me about McAfee when he makes statements that a lot of people want the Wvu job. I'm sure there are a lot of coaches in the G5 and assistants in the power 5 that would jump at this job if offered. The real question is how many of these guys would we actually want. Only Baker and some of his closest confidants really know that answer.

Yeah I’m not sure how much I believe Pat McAfee, but I’m not saying he’s wrong. WVU should be an attractive job.

If a coach can win 8-9 games a year, they could likely retire here at WVU. That’s got to be attractive to a lot of coaches I would think. It depends on the type of coach. Some will view it as a stepping stone as well.
Yes, but we have never had a coach win 8-9 games a year here on a consistent basis. I would say the majority view Wvu as a steppingstone. A lot has changed in this job in the last 15 years. We are in the Big 12. We have only won more than 8 games twice since being here. That was in 2016 and 2023 and both those seasons were deemed as down years in the conference. We aren't playing games in areas where we are recruiting. This is a bigger problem than most realize. It's the real reason Utah is not happy about being in the Big 12. The majority of Utah's recruiting is California based, and they don't have a presence there anymore. Look what happened to Wvu's Florida recruiting once we left the big east. In our final season in the Big East, we signed 13 players from the state of Florida. We haven't come anywhere close to that since we have been in the big 12. We have had two coaches in a row that were considered up and comers fail here. According to Locked on West Virginia and some of the other podcasts covering Big 12 football, Wvu is in the lower half of the conference when it comes to NIL. It doesn't mean we can't get a good coach, and that people won't be interested but I think coaches looked at this job more favorable 15 years ago then they do today. Especially when most are looking to parlay it into a bigger gig.
