OT: Trip to DC

Anybody have any hotel/area recommendations? I am taking my dad to DC to see the monuments, museums, etc. We are driving so taking into consideration parking, proximity to metrorail, $$$, safety, etc. We do not mind staying outside DC and using the metro rail. Any tips or recs would be appreciated. thanks.
