1. I support his return 100%. In reality, I would have supported any pick 100%. I am a Mountaineer fan first and foremost. I will support RRod until he proves unworthy of that support. I hope he never proves unworthy. We are all united now in our hope and prayer that RRod is highly successful. We must become relevant again.
2. We are hiring a coach, not a saint or a pastor. I now care about RRod's personal life only as to its reflection on WVU and our football program. I would not have let past indiscretions cloud my thinking. Perhaps if I had two completely equal candidates, I would have chosen the one without baggage. I trust that Wren did not have that luxury.
3. I think RRod's return brings with it significant donor support. And, as we all know, money is nearly everything in today's game. My guess, and it is a guess, is that the donor base, by and large, wanted RRod to return. Now that they got their way, I think they will feel the onus is on them to make sure he has the financial resources to win. And I hope that Wren reminds them of that duty frequently.
4. The fan base is torn right now, mimicking the board. That is to be expected after RRod's disastrous departure. But over time, fans will remember the last golden age of Mountaineer football. The huge wins. The BCS championships. And RRod deserves credit for putting us in that position. He caught lightening in a bottle with PW and SS. We have to hope and pray that history repeats itself.
5. RRod knows what situation he is walking into. He knows that he has an enormous hurdle to overcome to win back all of the fans. He knows that his native state legacy is on the line. I think with all that in mind, his motivation to win is going to be extraordinary. More than the vast majority of other coaches. And motivation and effort go a long way in a coaching staff. Not just on the field but off the field in the all important fund raising.
6. RRod is a buttoned up coach. He's highly competitive. He's tough. And his teams will reflect his personality. We will return to physical football. Physicality and hard work reflect the fan base. Lunch box types. A return to our roots is a good thing. And our offensive scheme will be unique in the Big 12, which is a plus. Very hard to prepare for that in just one week. That alone gives us a bit of an edge.
Wren has earned my trust. The hiring of Kellogg and DeVries were simply excellent choices.
