MORGANTOWN, W.Va. (October 4, 2019) – The West Virginia University baseball team fell to Marshall, 6-4, in exhibition play on Friday night at Monongalia County Ballpark.

The Mountaineers took an early lead with a run in the third inning before putting together a comeback attempt with two runs in the eighth and a one in the ninth. However, WVU couldn’t fight all the way back in the loss.

West Virginia right-handed pitcher Haden Erbe struck out the side to begin the ball game, before he worked out of a jam in the top of the second to keep the contest scoreless. The Lafayette, Louisiana, native went on to pitch three innings, allowing just one hit and no runs while striking out six.

WVU took the lead in the bottom of the third when junior infielder Tyler Doanes drove in sophomore outfielder Austin Davis to make it 1-0. The Thundering Herd plated five in the fifth, though, taking a 5-1 lead. The visitors added another run in the sixth on a sacrifice fly.

Trailing, 6-1, the Mountaineers cut into the deficit in the bottom of the eighth when sophomore infielder Ryan Archibald and freshman outfielder Chris Klein came around to score to make it 6-3.

In the bottom of the ninth, redshirt sophomore catcher Vince Ippoliti scored on an error to make it a 6-4 game, but the Mountaineers could draw no closer despite threatening with men on base.

The Mountaineers finished with four runs on eight hits and didn’t commit an error. Marshall finished with six runs on six hits and two errors. Davis and Doanes finished with a pair of hits each to lead WVU, while freshmen pitchers Jacob Watters, Jake Carr and Carter Lyles combined to work four innings of relief from the sixth to the ninth, allowing no runs and no hits. The trio combined for six strikeouts.
