For those who want to pooh-pooh Missouri’s defense, check out this in the article by the Missouri sportswriter:

The Mountaineers (1-0) piled up 494 yards of offense against a Missouri defense that was expected to be the team’s strength. It marked the first time Missouri (0-1) surrendered more than 450 yards since its 2014 Southeastern Conference Championship loss to Alabama. A year ago, when Odom was MU’s defensive coordinator, the Tigers limited 11 of 12 opponents to fewer than 370 yards.

I think it is the best defense we will face this year.

Maybe.

Certainly not the best offense we'll see though... ...and we gave up almost 500 yards. Sure there was some garbage yards but it's a real concern...

Agreed but all in all I was happy.

With 14 minutes to go the game, WVU had only given up about 260 yards of offense. Missouri really padded their stats the last 3 minutes of the game with the garbage TD and onside kick.

Only one TD surrendered by the backups in garbage time.

Agreed, far more capable offenses remain in league play.

But I think we have a serviceable defense. Up to par with the other BXII defenses and better than several.

S Dak St scored 41 at TCU. ND put up 47 at TX. Houston passed > 300 yards on OU.

Would put WVU D on par with the rest. K-State did a pretty good at Stanford despite the loss.

That's an accurate assessment, provided the defense doesn't have too many injuries because it lacks depth, since 6 went to the NFL including 4 via the draft.

We'll know more after the BYU game.

From the games I saw of Big 12 teams, K State has the best defense.

I'm not as confident in our defense. Missouri's offense couldn't seem to get out of its own way with the QB overthrowing wide open receivers at times and the receivers dropping passes right between the numbers.

3 dropped passes by Missouri 3 dropped by WVU. Overthrows were about the same as well. Give some credit to WVU. Missouri will win some games this year.

The beauty of college football is unpredictability. Which means you can't predict after game 1 what the two opponents will look like in game 10.
The only opponent that can do that for WVU is Maryland. Something like 10 out of 13 years if WVU beat the Terps it had a winning season and if it lost to Maryland it had a losing season.
But there are few accurate barometers otherwise.
Oklahoma is not out of the end of season top 10 rankings.
Neither is LSU.
And Houston might lose a game or two against its lower-level competition.
No one knows. That's what makes college football so great.
Now, on to Youngstown and BYU and the Big 12 schedule. Let's enjoy the season because it will be over before you know it. It always is.

Missouri got THREE points against WVU's first team defense. No concern on my part.

Everyone seems to be overlooking the play of the Oline. They where able to open up nice holes against mizzou's D they should be able to open up Hugh holes against much weaker Big 12 defenses.
