Marshall RB allegedly shouted slurs, punched 2 men kissing
HUNTINGTON, W.Va. — Marshall University running back Steward Butler was charged with two counts of battery for allegedly assaulting two men he saw kissing.
Butler, 23, was arraigned Wednesday morning in Cabell County Magistrate Court and released on $10,000 personal recognizance bond.
Police say the incident occurred April 9 along Ninth Street in Huntington. Butler was in a passing car when he witnessed the two men kiss along the sidewalk. The criminal complaint alleges Butler got out of the car, shouted slurs at the men, and then struck the victims in the face with a closed fist.
One of the victims reportedly captured the incident on video.
Butler was arraigned on misdemeanor charges Wednesday morning, but the evidence has been turned over to the FBI to review for possible civil rights violations.
The Marshall Athletic Department released a statement:
“We are aware of the situation involving Marshall running back Steward Butler and are currently in the process of gathering all available information. We will handle the matter internally and appropriately.”
Butler is entering his senior season with Marshall. Butler has 295 carries for 2,063 yards in career with the Thundering Herd.
