There is certainly no magic formula for hiring successful football coaches, but a recent pattern does exist for not hiring a coach from a historically successful G-5 program. For example, Appy State has been consistently successful. Satterfield and Drinkwitz have been busts. Likewise for Troy and Brown. Ditto for Harsin at Auburn. Same for Houston. These programs are positioned for success. Therefore, beware of Davis. I would also steer clear of Chadwell. Coastal Carolina May lack tradition, but has the location and infrastructure for success.
Look for a coach like Leipold who has built successful programs at historically bad programs like Buffalo. Rhule (Temple) is another good example. See also Fleck (Western Michigan). In fact, the MAC is always a good place to look for football coaches because most of the programs are on equal footing. Winning in the MAC generally indicates that a coach is doing more with the same resources than his fellow MAC coaches.
