It isn't really that hard to understand. Very few people transcend the sport they played for a specific team. Jackie Robinson in MLB so every team has retired his number as the highest honor they could give in recognition and will be discussed and remembered forever. Same with Jerry West as a great WVian, the greatest WVU player of any sport and the greatest ambassador to the university and the state has ever seen. So WVU is honoring him in this way among other ways but by retiring his number, it will always be discussed among the entire athletic program forever. As it should.

Mind boggling this had to be explained and unfortunately, some will still not understand for whatever reason.
